The Houston Dynamo were founded in 2005 and started playing their first games in 2006. Houston has had great seasons, appearing in four MLS Cups and winning two U.S. Open Cups, but have faltered over the past few seasons, combining for a 63-44-90 record since 2020.

The Houston Dynamo are owned by Ted Segal and won their only two MLS Cups in their first two seasons of existence in 2006 and 2007. The Dynamo played their first six seasons at the University of Houston's Robertson Stadium, then moved to a 22,039-seat soccer-specific stadium called Shell Energy Stadium in 2012.
