FedEx St. Jude Championship: Picks, Predictions and Odds

It is down to business for the 70 players who have qualified for the FedEx Cup playoffs, as the high-stakes FedEx St. Jude Championship takes place at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee this week.

The top 50 in the standings after this week’s tournament will qualify for the next round at the BMW Championship before the Tour Championship.

First, the field will have to negotiate this week’s 7,243-yard, par 70 test, where Lucas Glover beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff 12 months ago to follow up on the success he enjoyed the previous week at the Wyndham Championship.

2024 FedEx St Jude Championship betting picks and predictions

Rory McIlroy to win (+850)

Rory McIlroy may still be reflecting on the way he allowed the U.S. Open to slip through his fingers with poor putting in the closing stages, but apart from missing the cut at The Open, he has played pretty solidly since and heads into the FedEx Cup playoffs in fine form.

The Northern Irishman bounced back from that Royal Troon disappointment with a tie for fifth place when representing Ireland at the Olympics.

He has already tasted success this year after winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside partner Shane Lowry and then he got a win on his own in the Wells Fargo Championship.

As the strongest player on the PGA Tour off the tee, TPC Southwind sets up well for McIlroy and he has claimed three top-10 finishes on this Memphis course.

That run included third spot last year when he closed strongly with a 65 to end up just a shot shy of making the playoff, so it looks like he can make another bold bid for FedEx Cup glory now we have reached the business end of the campaign.

Corey Conners to win (+3500)

Corey Conners was ninth at Le Golf National for the Olympics last week as he, like McIlroy, closed with an encouraging 66.

The Canadian is the sort of skilled tee-to-green operator who should do well at Southwind and he produced his best finish there last year when he claimed a share of sixth place in his seventh tournament on the course.

On that occasion, he fired a disappointing two-over-par 72 on the Friday, but recovered well by taming the Tennessee track when he recorded a pair of weekend 65s.

Conners is an extremely consistent performer - he has not finished lower than 30th in any of his last 10 tournaments - and we can expect another strong effort from him this week.

Aaron Rai to win (+5500)

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler should be buzzing this week after adding a gold medal to his trophy cabinet last week, but Englishman Aaron Rai will be just as pleased with the way things have been going for him over the last few weeks.

The 29-year-old from Wolverhampton heads to Memphis in electric form after claiming his first PGA Tour success at the Wyndham Championship, which came after a series of other impressive results.

While his 75th at Royal Troon was disappointing, there has been a feeling for a few weeks that it would not be long until Rai made a breakthrough after he had been second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, seventh at the John Deere Classic and fourth at the Scottish Open.

His two-shot victory on Sunday will have him buzzing and while he has not finished better than 12th in four Southwind attempts, the quality of his tee-to-green game suggests he can make a strong challenge.

Rai’s confidence could hardly be higher, although he did not beat the strongest of fields at Sedgefield Country Club this past weekend, and he will be mindful that completing the double is possible as Lucas Glover demonstrated last year when he won the St Jude after claiming Wyndham success the previous Sunday.
