The BMW Championship serves as the second of three events in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, concluding the PGA Tour season.
In this tournament, only the top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings compete for the opportunity to qualify for the Tour Championship.
Since the field is limited to 50 players, there is no 36-hole cut. At the end of the tournament, the top 30 players in the points standings will advance to the finale in Atlanta.
Originally known as the Western Open, the tournament dates back to 1899 and was rebranded as the BMW Championship in 2007.

The payouts for each of the below finishing positions will be the same in 2024 as they were 2023.

4. Rory McIlroy - $990,000
T5. Max Homa, Brian Harman - $830,000 (each get $790,000)

You might be wondering why some players took home less than what they should have for where they finished.
For ties, the players split the sum of the prize money for their finishing position and all subsequent spots that no player finished in. So for the two second-place finishers, they split the sum of the second and third place prize, hence why their share is less than if they had finished as the lone runner-up.
Unlike most every other tournament PGA Tour golfers play in, there is no second-round cut at the BMW Championship. It begins with a 50-player field, around a third of the number of a typical PGA Tour event.
However, the players in positions 31-50 in the FedEx Cup points standings at the end of the tournament are eliminated from contention and not invited to play in the Tour Championship.
These 20 players do still earn anywhere from $66,000 to $150,000 for playing in the tournament.
The total purse for the BMW Championship is $20 million.
