The Giro d’Italia, first held in 1909, is one of cycling’s three Grand Tours and is widely known as the sport’s second-biggest stage race behind the Tour de France.
The race consists of 21 stages and takes riders throughout Italy, with many of the final stages taking place in the Alps and Dolomites mountain ranges. In total, the race spans over three weeks, 3,443.3 total kilometers, and requires riders to gain 52,350 meters in elevation, according to the Giro website.
Riders will compete for the ‘Maglia Rosa,’ a pink jersey worn by the leader after each stage and officially awarded to the winning rider with the lowest overall time.
In 2024, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar won the Giro and was awarded the Maglia Rosa.
