Get ready to gear up for the summer of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Milwaukee Bucks are at risk of losing their all-time greatest player this summer, with reports surfacing that Giannis is open to a move away from Milwaukee following a third consecutive first-round playoff exit.
Antetokounmpo has played his entire NBA career with the Bucks and led the franchise to its first championship in 50 years back in 2021. In 12 seasons, Giannis has won a title, Finals MVP, two regular season MVPs and a Defensive Player of the Year while making nine All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams. In short, ‘The Greek Freak’ is one of the most dominant players of the 21st century.
Antetokounmpo is under contract with the Bucks for another two seasons, with a player option in 2027/28, meaning it will take a massive trade haul to pry him away from Milwaukee.
Let’s take a look at the teams favored to land Antetokounmpo this summer.
MIL Bucks | -500 |
NY Knicks | +950 |
TOR Raptors | +1200 |
SA Spurs | +1400 |
HOU Rockets | +2000 |
DAL Mavericks | +2800 |
BKN Nets | +3000 |
MIA Heat | +3000 |
OKC Thunder | +3300 |
The Bucks (-500) are heavily favored to keep Giannis this offseason.
ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported Wednesday morning on Get Up “there is no Giannis Antetokounmpo trade market… he has not asked for it. The Bucks are not looking to trade him.” As a result, Milwaukee is the odds-on favorite to retain their star this summer.
This also contradicts a previous report that Antetokounmpo is “open-minded” to a move away from the only franchise he’s ever played for. Both can be true, and Giannis’ desire for a new team may have been quelled in recent weeks as he settled into the offseason and assessed potential options.
The New York Knicks are the new second-favorites to land Giannis, priced at +950. After losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau, perhaps the first domino to fall in what could be another busy offseason in New York.
Team president Leon Rose has not been shy when it comes to roster overhaul in recent years, notably trading for OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns in an effort to build a championship roster in New York. Adding Giannis, perhaps at the expense of one or more of those players, could be the next step in Rose’s eyes.
The Toronto Raptors (+1200) and San Antonio Spurs (+1400) are the most likely teams other than Milwaukee and New York to land the two-time MVP, according to bet365.
While Toronto doesn’t make a ton of sense on paper given their lack of identity and success since winning the 2019 NBA title, there is reported to be “mutual interest” between Giannis and the Raptors, and a move similar to Kawhi Leonard’s trade to Toronto in 2018 – which propelled the franchise to its first ever championship – is possible.
It would likely require Toronto to trade away their current best player in Scottie Barnes, plus various other assets, but that could be a move Masai Ujiri makes if it means landing a top-3 player in the league in Giannis.
The Spurs and Houston Rockets (+2000) each fit the profile of a team that can land Giannis, from trade assets to cap room to their current roster.
San Antonio boasts arguably the league’s top young star in Victor Wembanyama, and trading away a boatload of assets, including 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, would be needed to acquire Giannis.
With Wemby entering his third year and yet to make the playoffs, the Spurs will likely look to pair him with another established star sooner rather than later, and Giannis is the ideal option.
Houston is in a slightly different position as a young team ahead of schedule that just reached the playoffs as the Western Conference No. 2 seed. Rockets brass would love to pair Giannis with budding stars Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson to challenge the powers that be in the West for years to come.
