The Georgia Bulldogs (7-2, 5-2 SEC) are one of five SEC teams with two losses in conference play, and the College Football Playoff Selection Committee left them out of the bracket after the Week 11 loss to Ole Miss.
Alabama and Ole Miss (both 4-2 in the SEC) made it, along with one-loss teams Texas and Tennessee. Georgia, meanwhile, was ranked 12th but fell out of the bracket because 13th-ranked Boise State is projected to be the highest-ranked non-Power 4 conference champion, which automatically earns a Playoff spot.
Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, Missouri and LSU all have two losses in SEC play, while Texas A&M has two overall losses and one against SEC competition. That means things like strength of schedule and quality wins are the difference between the teams included and excluded from the latest rankings.
If the season ended today, Georgia would miss the Playoff. But the Bulldogs have three games remaining, including a home showdown against Tennessee on November 16, meaning they can play their way into the postseason.
Because of that, Georgia is still +800 to win the National Championship. Only Ohio State (+320), Oregon (+350) and Texas (+450) have shorter odds. Alabama is tied with Georgia at +800.
Georgia has faced a brutal schedule that includes a neutral-site win over then-No. 14 Clemson in Week 1, a road loss to then-No. 4 Alabama in late September, a win at then-No. 1 Texas in October, and a loss to then-No. 16 Ole Miss this past weekend.
While they have impressive wins on their resume, the Bulldogs have not played clean football.
QB Carson Beck has 12 interceptions on the year, including multi-INT games against Bama, Mississippi State, Texas and Florida. He hasn't had a positive TD-INT ratio since throwing for three scores and two picks against Mississippi State.
Despite all those turnovers, the Ole Miss game was the first time Georgia was held below 30 points since a 13-12 win over Kentucky in Week 3.
The Bulldogs defense allows just 18.4 points per game - 16th-fewest out of 134 Division I football teams - and if Beck cleans up his play, this team will be hard to beat.
