The WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati is set for another all-American clash in the third round, as Coco Gauff prepares to take on Ann Li.
This follows a similar domestic matchup where Jessica Pegula defeated Emma Navarro.
Gauff, the tournament's fourth seed, and Li, ranked 29th, both received byes in the first round. Gauff has been enjoying a strong season, though a title has remained just out of reach. She was a finalist in Miami, where she fell to Sabalenka, and also reached the final in Rome, losing a three-set battle to Svitolina. More recently, she made it to the semifinals at both Wimbledon and the Toronto Open, narrowly missing out on a chance to compete for the championship.
In contrast, Li has had a more challenging year. Her best results came during the clay-court season, where she reached the quarterfinals in Rouen, the fourth round at the Madrid Open, and the semifinals in Strasbourg. Her grass-court campaign and subsequent return to hard courts have been more subdued.
