Martinelli is of Italian descent through his father and owns dual Brazilian-Italian citizenship, but represents Brazil nationally.
He got his first major experience with Brazil at the 2020 Summer Olympics where he scored his team's second penalty en route to beating Mexico in the semi-final.
His next major appearance came at the 2022 World Cup, coming on as a substitute in most games.
He scored his first regulation goal with Brazil in 2023 against Colombia in the 2026 World Cup qualification and hasn't looked back since.

Martinelli's senior career started with his youth career's team Ituano. After being the club's top goalscorer at the 2019 Campeonato Paulista, he had lots of interest from Premier League teams, including Arsenal.
Martinelli signed a long-term contract with The Gunners in 2019, making his Premier League debut in August of that year.
In his first competitive start for his new team, Martinelli scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup and was subsequently named Arsenal's Player of the Month for October.
More recently, in November 2025, the forward became the first Arsenal player to score in five consecutive Champions League matches, then scored his first career hat-trick in January 2026 - he has plenty of momentum heading into the World Cup.
