MLB Friday review: Atlanta picks up where they left off

After a much needed All-Star Break, the MLB resumed play on Friday night, and for some teams it felt like normal service, good or bad, was quickly resumed.

Braves straight back on the offensive

For the Atlanta Braves, it felt as though they never took a break, as they went right back to dominating.

The Braves opened with the Chicago White Sox on Friday and after a first inning grand slam by Matt Olson, the Braves never looked back on their way to a 9-0 win.

What is even more impressive is the fact that Charlie Morton held the White Sox scoreless. He pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, and then the bullpen finished off the remaining two innings.

With this win, the Braves are now 61-29 on the season.

They have absolute control of the National League East division with the closest team to them being the Miami Marlins

Not to say that the Marlins are not a good team, because they have put together a solid record and honestly, the Marlins would be leading several other divisions.

However, the Braves find themselves 9.5 games ahead of the Marlins and they do not look like they will be giving them much ground in the second half of the season.

The Atlanta Braves are starting to lose value in the futures market almost everyday, so it may pay to back them sooner rather than later if so desired.

The Braves are +220 to win the World Series, +120 for National League glory while they are -20000 to maintain their position on top of the National League East division.

Dodgers retake NL West

It is well documented that the Los Angeles Dodgers had a less than ideal first half of the season.

From injuries, to blown leads, to inconsistent starting pitching, there were whispers that the Dodgers’ dominance may be ending.

That being said, on Friday night, the Dodgers took the first step to re-establishing their dominance, at least in the National League West division.

The Dodgers shutout the New York Mets on Friday night by a score of 6-0.

Not only did the Dodgers keep the Mets scoreless, but they also had a combined one-hitter. That being Julio Urias and three relievers.

Meanwhile, some timely hitting in the back half of the game forced Justin Verlander to be pulled and then it was open season on the bullpen in the final few innings.

The reason why this win is significant is because the Arizona Diamondbacks lost their game to the Toronto Blue Jays meaning they have regained the National League West division.

Granted, it is only one game, and there are still a few months left in the season, but for the Dodgers, they have not been in first place in the division by themselves for a while, so this is a big step.

The Dodgers are now +475 to go all the way and win the World Series, +240 to win the National League and -380 to finish top of the division. LA are listed at -1400 to make the playoffs.

Yankees struggles compounding

The New York Yankees are by no means a terrible team this season but their offense has become woefully inconsistent.

They even fired their late hitting coach, and hired a new one with the hope the offense could get something going to start the second half of the season.

The Yankees quickly took a 2-0 in the first inning on Friday night against the Colorado Rockies

Unfortunately for them, the rest of the game was all Colorado.

The Rockies plated seven straight runs on their way to a dominant 7-2 win.

With that loss, the Yankees have slumped to last place in the American League East division. The Yankees now have a 49-43 record on the season and while it seems unlikely they will be able to catch the Tampa Bay Rays, they can still push for the playoffs through the Wild Card.

The Yankees are currently 2.0 games back of the final Wild Card team, the Toronto Blue Jays, but their offense needs to improve quickly if they want to stay in the hunt.

The Yankees’ are +2200 to win the World Series and +1100 for American League success. The Pinstripers are +1200 to take the East division and -130 to make the postseason.
