Here are some of the most appealing Free Agents left on the open market, with players set be invited to Spring Training to showcase their worth for a possible contract for the forthcoming season.

Gary Sanchez

Former New York Yankee Gary Sanchez was traded to the Minnesota Twins along with third baseman Gio Urshela before the 2022 season, in exchange for third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt.

Sanchez won’t be returning to the Twins as they have signed two-time World Series champion Christian Vazquez to a three-year, $30million contract.

His likely destination could be the Boston Red Sox, who have checked in on the player as a possible number two catcher.

The San Francisco Giants have also shown an interest, as have the Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sanchez hit .205 with 16 home runs in 128 games last season, while the Twins are +5000 to win the World Series in 2023. 

Luke Voit

Another former New York Yankee who is still on the free agency market is hitter Luke Voit.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after spending the 2022 campaign with the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals. Voit hit 21 home runs and drove in 69 RBI’s across 135 games after battling with knee injuries.

The Red Sox could be a destination for the slugger, who would likely get a bench spot as they already have Triston Cass pencilled in for the first base position. Justin Turner is likely to be the designated hitter, so as a platoon player Voit would fit the bill.

The Red Sox are +4000 to win the 2023 World Series.

Josh Harrison

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Josh Harrison is another player who could be destined for the Red Sox.

Having finished bottom of the American League East Division, the Red Sox are hoping to put up more of a challenge in 2023.

Harrison was a two-time All-Star when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates and has played everywhere but pitcher and catcher in a long career. He had a league average .256 with the bat in 2022 when he was with the Chicago White Sox.

Didi Gregorius

Another former Yankee who finds himself on the free agency market, Didi Gregorius was released by the Philadelphia Phillies in August of 2022, so he missed their run to the World Series.

It never really worked out for Gregorius in the Bronx either and now at 33 years old the shortstop will be looking for a club for whom he can play a regular game.

Injuries curtailed his time with the Phillies and with the emergence of Bryson Stott, Gregorius’ time in Philadelphia was a ticking clock.

The Dutchman will be playing with his national team in the World Baseball Classic, where he can showcase his skills for a potential suitor, if he hasn’t been already picked up by then.

The Netherlands are +4000 to win the 2023 World Baseball Classic which starts in early March.

Jonathan Villar

The 32-year-old Jonathan Villar can play a variety of positions including third base, shortstop and second base.

Having played the season with the New York Mets in 2021, Villar played with the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels in 2022.

He was released by the Angels at the end of July and signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners, before opting for free agency in November 2022.

Among the clubs that require a small amount of infield help are the White Sox and Villar would fit that mould.

General Manager Rick Hahn was asked by the Chicago Tribune if the White Sox would look outside the organisation for some potential infield help, he said: “It’s certainly a possibility.” 

The White Sox are +2800 to win the World Series in 2023.

Albert Almora Jr.

Another player that has started to bounce around the leagues is Albert Almora Jr.

The 28-year-old has excellent defensive skills, although he struggles with the bat. Last season Almora was with the Cincinnati Reds until he was released in September - he batted .223 with five home runs in 64 games.

He won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016 and the Pittsburgh Pirates could look at Almora’s skills and he could play a useful part in their rebuild.
