Florida State and Georgia Tech open up the 2024 College Football season across the pond, as the two schools are set to face off this Saturday, August 24 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
The Seminoles are ranked 10th in the preseason AP Poll, and FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell enters his fifth season in charge.
Georgia Tech Head Coach Brent Key enters his second full season at the helm after he posted a 4-4 record as an interim head coach in 2022 and a 7-6 record in his first season in 2023. This is an early test for the Yellow Jackets, but we expect them to make things difficult for Florida State.
Let’s dive into the various Florida State vs. Georgia Tech betting picks, predictions and odds for their game this weekend.
Florida State and Georgia Tech will go head-to-head on Saturday. While the Yellow Jackets return a very similar cast as last season, there has been a mountain of turnover in Tallahassee.
Mike Norvell has done well to bring in QB DJ Uiagalelei (Oregon State), EDGE Marvin Jones Jr. (Georgia) and WR Malik Benson (Alabama) via the transfer portal.
Still, they suffered major losses on defense via the portal and NFL Draft. They’ll go up against a Georgia Tech offense led by QB Haynes King, who can beat the Seminoles on the ground or in the air.
The Yellow Jackets aren’t nearly as talented as Florida State, but continuity is more important than ever at the beginning of the season.
The ability to acquire players via the transfer portal helps teams over the entire season, but we think FSU will start slow out of the gates with multiple new faces joining the team on both sides of the ball.
Georgia Tech brings back three starters on the defensive line and acquired Jordan van den Berg (Penn State) and Ayo Tifase (Florida State), so we expect them to attack the Seminoles early and often with an elite rushing attack.
Overall, we like what Key is doing down in Atlanta, especially after leading the Yellow Jackets to their first bowl game in five seasons. Although we don’t think GT will win outright, we’ll gladly take Georgia Tech +10.5 in Saturday’s opener.
Although we think the Yellow Jackets will keep Saturday’s game close, we do expect the Seminoles to put up points eventually. The Yellow Jackets should have a strong rushing attack this season, but King is more than capable of beating teams in the air.
Additionally, Florida State lost their best CB from last season to the transfer portal and two top D-linemen to the NFL, so we expect their defense to take a step backward compared to last year. That said, the offense should be able to exploit a suspect Georgia Tech defense with ease.
Brent Key’s team allowed a successful play 38.5 percent of the time last season per PFF, which was T-123 in the country. Additionally, they gave up explosive runs 18.2 percent of the time (120th in the country) and explosive passes 14.6 percent of the time (78th in the country).
They gave up 39 points to Louisville in last season’s opener, and ranked teams averaged 35.3 points per game against them in 2023/24.
We expect both teams to beat 30 points, so the second one of our predictions is on Over 55.5 total points.
