With seven races of the 2024 F1 season remaining, the battle at the top of the Drivers’ Championship is starting to get interesting as the focus switches to Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.
Lando Norris impressed last weekend at the Azerbaijan to finish in fourth place after starting the race in Baku down in 15th.
Passing reigning World Champion Max Verstappen on his way to fourth spot, Norris has now narrowed the gap on the Dutchman to 59 points in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Getting set to race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where Verstappen has not won before despite years of F1 dominance, McLaren star Norris will be hoping to cut the deficit even more to the Red Bull frontrunner.
It does come as somewhat of a surprise that Verstappen has not previously taken a chequered flag at the Singapore Grand Prix.
In his eight races at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Verstappen has only finished on the podium twice and those efforts came back in 2018 and 2019.
Finishing seventh and fifth in his last two visits to Singapore, the Marina Bay Street Circuit has not been a happy hunting ground for the Dutch driver.
That should play into the hands of Norris, who impressed under difficult circumstances in Baku last weekend.
Battling his way through the grid, the Brit produced a fine performance and if all goes well in qualifying, he should be a serious contender for the chequered flag on Sunday.
Norris, who has already earned two race wins this season in the USA and the Netherlands, seems to have a liking for this track, having finished in second place at the Singapore Grand Prix just last year.
Having come on leaps and bounds since that second-placed finish 12 months ago, Norris is good value to go one better in Singapore this time around.
Having crashed with Red Bull driver Sergio Perez with two laps to go at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when challenging for third last weekend, Carlos Sainz will be motivated to get back competing for a podium place in Singapore.
Fortunately for both Perez and Sainz, it’s a quick turnaround from Azerbaijan and a chance of redemption awaits both drivers this weekend.
Sainz will have fond memories of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, having beaten Norris to win the Singapore Grand Prix last year.
It was a memorable night for the man from Madrid, who was able to land just his second F1 race win in that contest.
Heading back to Singapore with perhaps a point to prove after missing out on third last week, Sainz is worth considering for a podium finish this weekend.
Very much in the same situation as Sainz, Perez will be motivated to impress in Singapore on Sunday and is good value to finish in the top six at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The Mexican driver also has good memories of this track, as he beat Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Sainz to win the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix.
Perez has bounced back from disappointments before and has been able to show a good level of consistency this season.
Earning seven top-six finishes already this year, Perez looks capable of returning his Red Bull to the top six again on Sunday in Singapore.
