Lewis Hamilton ended a three-year wait for his 104th Grand Prix victory at Silverstone last time out and the Briton will fancy his chances of another strong showing at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The 39-year-old made full use of the rapidly improving Mercedes to qualify second behind teammate George Russell before putting in a stellar showing in a rain-hit Grand Prix on Sunday.
Taking advantage of changeable conditions and driving around a circuit he adores, the Ferrari-bound driver warded off late pressure from Max Verstappen to claim a second-successive Silver Arrows win.
Will he repeat the feat this weekend in Hungary?
There are three British drivers currently on the Formula One grid and, for the first season in a very long time, all three have a genuine shot at the top step of the podium in any given race.
In fact, all three have already taken their place there this year, with Lando Norris taking a maiden victory in Miami before George Russell and Hamilton claimed Grand Prix wins in Austria and Great Britain respectively in the last two races.
The continued strengthening of McLaren and Mercedes’ sudden revival has made this possible, with Russell, Hamilton, and Norris qualifying first, second, and third respectively in the British Grand Prix.
Now, they will be targeting a win around a track that all three have tasted success at.
Russell claimed his first points of the 2021 season around the Hungaroring for Williams and followed that up with a podium here in his first season at Mercedes, while Norris fought off Sergio Perez to claim second in last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
However, it is Hamilton who has the most storied history in Budapest, winning the Hungarian Grand Prix a record eight times, double that of Michael Schumacher in second.
After his British Grand Prix victory two weeks ago, Hamilton has the chance to match his record of winning nine times around a single circuit this weekend.
World Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen has now failed to win three of the last five Grands Prix and one of the British trio looks a good bet to eat into his championship lead at the Hungaroring.
Norris may have suffered from a bungled strategy call at the British Grand Prix last time out, but even that was not enough to keep the McLaren golden boy from the podium celebrations at Silverstone.
The decision to put him on soft tyres for the final stint allowed championship rival Verstappen to leapfrog the Bristol-born driver, but he still finished five seconds ahead of fourth-placed teammate Oscar Piastri to continue his excellent record of podium finishes.
Norris has now finished in the top three in six of the last eight races, and his two failures to do so have hardly been bad drives. He finished fourth in Monaco and later was forced to retire after being taken out by Verstappen as he battled for the lead in Austria.
The 24-year-old finished second to Verstappen here last year, and he looks good value to make it two Hungarian podium appearances in a row this Sunday.
The British Grand Prix was dominated by coverage at the front of the field as the rain wreaked havoc on the track, so one story that went under the radar is a second-successive sixth-place finish for Nico Hulkenberg.
The Haas driver put in an excellent performance in both Austria and Great Britain and is moving the American team closer to RB-Honda RBPT before he departs for Sauber next year.
The German has earned 22 of Haas’ 27 points and has finished in the points five times this season.
More impressively, he has only finished lower than 11th twice, one of which was a retirement through no fault of his own in the Monaco Grand Prix and the other being a 16th-place finish in the 2024 curtain raiser in Bahrain.
The 36-year-old is showing excellent pace at the moment and can challenge for a strong points finish again.
