F1 begins the European leg of the 2024 season this weekend as the teams and drivers hop over the Atlantic Ocean to Italy for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Last year’s trip to Imola was canceled at late notice due to flooding in the area, making this a welcome return to the track.
Lando Norris claimed the headlines two weeks ago in Miami as he clinched his first-ever Grand Prix victory with a dominant drive in his upgraded McLaren.
The win came on his 110th race start and saw him stand on the podium for the 16th time, but other teams are implementing upgrades this weekend in the hopes of heaping the pressure on Red Bull Racing.
Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin are all expected to bring upgrades to Imola, while World Constructors’ Championship leaders and defending champions Red Bull are also bringing a package.
Plus, Norris' McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri will get the benefits of the fully-upgraded car that Norris ran in Miami.
This could shake up the front of the grid significantly and there is every possibility that we could have Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren all battling it out for the race win.
While the safety car timing in Miami did play a role in earning Norris his maiden Grand Prix victory, there is no denying it was a deserved victory in the end.
The McLaren showed the outright pace to extend Norris’ lead once he was out in front and that can be attributed to the upgrade package the young Brit was running on his car.
This weekend, it is Ferrari’s turn to introduce their potentially season-changing upgrades as they head to their home country for the first of two visits this season.
Monza is technically the Prancing Horse’s home Grand Prix, but Emilia Romagna comes a close second and it represents the perfect opportunity to continue a promising start to the season for Ferrari and number-one driver Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque man earned his third podium of the season and his sixth in his last nine Grand Prix starts in Miami. He preluded that with a second-place finish in the Miami Sprint on the Saturday.
Leclerc has not finished lower than fourth since he was disqualified from last season's United States Grand Prix in October. Ferrari have had at least one representative on the podium in five of the six races this season, including when they earned a deserved win in Australia through Carlos Sainz.
That, plus the upgrade package, which includes potential improvements to aerodynamics and cooling, should allow Leclerc to lead Ferrari to another podium and delight the hordes of Tifosi at Imola.
For the newly-rebranded Visa Cash App RB team, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is their official home race, with their Faenza base location just 10 miles from Imola and the home faithful hoping for a solid performance from Red Bull’s sister team.
There was plenty of fanfare when Daniel Ricciardo returned to Formula One partway through last season, but so far the Australian has been outshone by one of the grid’s most underrated drivers.
Yuki Tsunoda has finished ahead of his team-mate on four occasions this season and is responsible for all 14 of his team’s World Constructors’ Championship points so far.
The Japanese driver has bounced back from a poor start to the season and proving why he is still in F1.
He finished 14th and 15th in the opening two Grands Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia respectively, but since then he has claimed seventh-placed finishes in Australia and Miami - plus a points-finish in the Miami Sprint - and a tenth-placed finish at his home Grand Prix in Japan.
His only failure to claim points in this run came in China as he retired through no fault of his own following a collision with Kevin Magnussen, so he is a good pick to continue his positive start to the 2024 season.
