Canadian Grand Prix: Picks, Predictions and Odds

Max Verstappen's moment of madness at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix has seen him fall 39 points behind the table-topping McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

The world champion received a 10-second penalty after the red mist descended and he drove into George Russell, dropping him to 10th place in Barcelona.

The Red Bull star now heads to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, which he has won in each of the last three seasons, but the task ahead of him looks tough, with McLaren now having won seven of the nine races this season.

Piastri leads the championship by 10 points after taking his fifth win of the year in Spain and he heads the betting odds for Sunday's race.

There has been some doubt over whether Canada's Lance Stroll would be able to take part in his home event after missing the Barcelona race due to a hand injury, but he now appears on course to drive.

Canadian Grand Prix betting picks and predictions

Lando Norris to win (+175)

Max Verstappen admitted after the Spanish Grand Prix that he does not see himself as being in the F1 title battle this season, saying: "We are way too slow anyway to fight for the title."

While that is clearly an overreaction, he has had to use all of his talent to stay in touch with the McLaren pair.

The Dutch driver has remained competitive with two outstanding drives to win at Suzuka and Imola, but extending his run of success at Montreal is likely going to be tough.

The Canadian circuit, like Barcelona, is one where the best car usually wins, with Lewis Hamilton successful four times in five years for Mercedes before Verstappen's three victories.

McLaren posted their third one-two finish of the season in Barcelona and they have had both of their cars on the podium in seven of the nine races.

Choosing between the pair is not easy on a race-by-race basis, but now the odds have shifted more firmly in Piastri's favor, the value lies with backing Norris.

The British driver was second to Verstappen in Canada last season after starting third on the grid following an incredibly close qualifying session which saw the top seven drivers separated by only 0.28 seconds.

Piastri was fifth in the race last year after finishing out of the points in his Montreal debut in 2023, when he wrecked in a wet qualifying session.

The Australian has finished on the podium at every race since sliding off the track when a downpour struck late at his home race in the season-opener in Australia.

He has impressed with his coolness under pressure this season, while Norris has made more mistakes, particularly in qualifying, but the gap between the drivers is not as big as the odds suggest.

Russell took pole in Canada for Mercedes last season, but the weather forecast doesn't look good for his car, which seems to run much better in cooler conditions.

The forecast for Montreal is for mostly dry and warm weather, with only a slight chance of showers on race day.

Alex Albon top-six finish (+275)

Alex Albon was having a strong weekend in Canada last year before being the innocent victim of a collision with the spinning Ferrari of Carlos Sainz Jr., who is now his team-mate at Williams.

The Thai driver is equipped with a much more competitive car this season and has already accumulated 42 points, compared to just 12 in the whole of last season.

The Williams car remains fast in a straight line, which is a valuable asset for the long straights in Montreal, so a fourth top-six finish of the season could be a realistic target for Albon.

He was fifth in Melbourne, Miami, and Imola, which all have some similarities to the Canadian street circuit's characteristics, and Albon also achieved his joint-best finish of the 2023 season in Montreal when finishing seventh.

Nico Hulkenberg points finish (+450)

The Sauber team made a huge step forward at the Spanish Grand Prix, with Nico Hulkenberg finishing fifth, having not placed higher than 12th in the previous seven races.

The experienced German's only other points finish had come in the opening race at Melbourne, another street course that is similar to Montreal, meaning he should be confident of fighting for a top-half finish again.

Hulkenberg finished in the points in Canada for six successive races between 2014 and 2019 for the Force India and Renault teams, and he only just missed out on a point there last season when coming home 11th for Haas after qualifying 17th.
