The scene is set for another spicy F1 race at Silverstone in the British Grand Prix this weekend after title rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris wrecked each others' chances of victory when colliding in Austria.
The pair were battling for the lead at the time of the clash, which led to Norris parking his damaged car and Verstappen finishing only fifth, enabling George Russell to take advantage and record Mercedes' first race win of the season.
Verstappen extended his championship lead to 81 points as Norris failed to score and the world champion has still won seven of the first 11 rounds this year, but he is likely to face another tough battle.
Norris has failed to add to his victory in the Miami Grand Prix despite showing good pace at each of the last three races in Canada, Spain and Austria, but he has value at +250 to win his home race in Great Britain for the first time on Sunday.
Norris was second in Spain after taking pole position and was closing in on race leader Verstappen in Austria when the Dutch driver employed a questionable move to prevent him passing, damaging both cars in the process.
Verstappen was penalized by the race stewards, but the 10-second penalty had no effect on his placing, while Norris was left to count the cost.
The champion should be a formidable opponent once more this week as Red Bull's aerodynamic prowess is a benefit at the speedy Silverstone circuit, but McLaren also runs well in fast curves and should be on the pace again.
Verstappen has two Silverstone wins on his record. He won last year's British Grand Prix by 3.7 seconds with Norris in second but had claimed his first track success in the 2020 event known as the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
However, he has also had misfortunes there, not least when suffering a high-speed crash at Copse corner in the 2021 race after colliding with Lewis Hamilton.
In 2022, he was only seventh at Silverstone after his car's floor was damaged when he ran over some debris.
Norris demonstrated McLaren's major leap forward at this track last season when finishing second and will not lack motivation after what he will see as the injustice of the Austrian result.
Ferrari and Mercedes should not be ruled out either, with the Italian team having won at the track through Carlos Sainz Jr.'s first career victory just two years ago. He took third in Austria, but he was never a threat to the top two teams.
The Silver Arrows of Mercedes have picked up a podium finish at the last three races now, but they qualified only sixth and seventh at Silverstone last year and Hamilton's podium finish was fortunate as he gained positions during a late safety-car period.
Oscar Piastri was arguably denied a first career victory by having his best lap time deleted for marginally exceeding track limits in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Having set the third-fastest time, he dropped to seventh on the grid due to the penalty. If he didn't incur the penalty, he would surely have been the driver to inherit the victory after the incident between Verstappen and Norris if that had not occurred.
While there have been a couple of races this season when the Australian sophomore driver has looked a little off the pace of his team-mate Norris, he showed some good speed in Austria and says he enjoys driving at this track.
He was less than two seconds behind Russell at the checkered flag and may even have overhauled the British driver if a virtual safety-car period had not both allowed Russell to cool his tires and denied Piastri green-flag laps to pursue him.
Piastri qualified third in his first British Grand Prix last season and, at +120, looks well set to target a podium finish this time.
