France face a tricky opening test of their European Championship credentials when they take on a much-improved Austria in Frankfurt on Monday.
Les Bleus pack one of the most powerful squads around, spearheaded by World Cup star Kylian Mbappe and surrounded by a strong supporting cast assembled by experienced coach Didier Deschamps.
But their reputation is unlikely to deter Ralf Rangnick’s Austria from their brave tactical approach of playing out from the back and gegenpressing opponents.
Austria have scored at least once in each of their last 17 internationals and that run includes matches against some of Europe’s strongest nations.
They beat Germany 2-0 last November and Italy late in 2022 while Rangnick’s reign as coach began promisingly with a 3-0 thrashing of Croatia.
Austria have scored in 20 of their 22 matches under Rangnick and can cause France more problems than they have encountered in some soft warm-up matches for the tournament when clean sheets have come easily.
Deschamps’ side are unlikely to draw a blank in this clash either.
Les Bleus have scored in their last 12 competitive matches, a run that spans their qualifying campaign and the final four matches of the World Cup in Qatar.
And they struck twice to beat Austria in a friendly when the sides last met, although that was Rangnick’s fourth game at the helm and his side are more proficient at executing his orders these days.
France are -182 to win this game but Both teams to score is -125 and that is far more attractive.
While Mbappe's status as a global superstar is undisputed, some pundits have questioned whether the 25-year-old will exert his usual influence at Euro 2024 given his underwhelming end to the club season.
The French talisman was occasionally left out of the Paris Saint-Germain lineup due to minor injuries and failed to finish the campaign strongly.
This disappointing run coincided with the backdrop of his high-profile departure from the Parisian club to Real Madrid, which was long rumoured to be happening but only recently confirmed.
Mbappe and PSG fell short in the Champions League semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund and the forward also failed to sparkle in the French Cup final.
However, eye witness reports from France’s training camp in Germany suggest Mbappe may have been saving his best for the international stage.
He currently boasts an international goalscoring record of better than a goal every two games with 47 strikes from his 79 appearances for France.
That includes a run of 11 goals in 11 starts since his hat-trick heroics in the 2022 World Cup Final.
If he can rediscover the form he displayed in Qatar, the prolific striker will likely be the difference-maker as France aim to unlock Austria's stubborn rearguard.
The Austrian right-back could find himself in the firing line on Monday when Mbappe drifts over to the left to find space for counter attacks.
Posch is a relentless pressuriser of opponents and has the licence to push high into the other half as part of Rangnick’s pressing masterplan.
It suits his skillset as he recovered almost 11 balls in the opponents’ half every 90 minutes for Bologna last season with an additional five interceptions per game.
Only seven players in Serie A recovered more balls than Posch in counter-pressing recoveries, but such an aggressive approach can have its downside.
The Bologna defender was carded seven times in 31 Serie A games last season and also found his way into the referee’s notebook in three of six friendly matches for Austria played during the 2023/24 campaign.
No stranger to a yellow card, the 27-year-old cautioned twice in six appearances during Austria’s qualification and may be in line for another on Monday night.
