West Ham's 14-year stay in the Premier League could be coming to an end this season and anything short of a victory at St. James' Park against Newcastle on Sunday will see them move a step closer to relegation.
A win would lift the Hammers, who sit two points adrift of safety, out of the relegation zone and guarantee their survival fight goes to the final day, but anything less and their fate will be sealed if nearest rivals Tottenham win at Chelsea on Tuesday.
Newcastle have no such relegation fears, but it has been a disappointing season for Eddie Howe's side, who appear on course for a bottom-half finish and a summer overhaul that could include a managerial change.
A run of three defeats in 13 Premier League games had boosted West Ham's hopes of survival, but they have since lost back-to-back matches against Brentford and Arsenal without scoring, although that does not tell the whole story.
Nuno Espirito Santo's side hit the woodwork three times and had a goal disallowed against Brentford, while last weekend's narrow 1-0 loss to league leaders Arsenal was shrouded in controversy after the Hammers had a late goal ruled out.
The manner of the latter of those defeats will no doubt have riled up West Ham, who do at least have fond recent memories of facing Newcastle, having won the reverse fixture 3-1 at the London Stadium earlier in the season and triumphed 2-0 on their last visit to St. James' in November 2024.
Newcastle appear desperate for the season to end after seeing their faint European hopes disappear following last weekend's 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.
St. James' is usually such a fortress for the Magpies, but they have lost five of their last seven league fixtures in front of their own fans and may well prove the ideal opponents for West Ham to be facing at this pivotal stage of the season.
Newcastle would sit much higher up the Premier League table if they knew how to hold on to a lead, as no team in the English top flight has dropped more points from winning positions this season than the Magpies total of 27.
Howe's team have also conceded a league-high 20 goals inside the final 15 minutes and that will give West Ham encouragement even if they are chasing a goal or two in the closing exchanges.
The Hammers have gained a respectable nine points from losing positions this season, including coming from behind to beat Newcastle 3-1 in November, and history could well repeat itself on Sunday.
West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has had an eye for a goal throughout his Hammers career, not least when facing Newcastle, as he has scored more Premier League goals against the Magpies (five) than against any other team.
Soucek was on target when the two sides met at the London Stadium earlier in the season and in West Ham's 2-0 victory at St James' last term, while the omens are positive for the Hammers, as they have never lost to Newcastle when their midfielder has found the back of the net.
The Czech Republic international was also on the scoresheet in West Ham's last win - a 2-1 home success over Everton at the end of April - and his threat from set pieces makes him a real attacking asset for Nuno's team.
