Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars Game 5 betting pick and predictions

The Edmonton Oilers will have a chance to advance to their second straight Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night.

Edmonton skated to a 4-1 victory in Game 4 on home ice to take a commanding 3-1 series lead, but the win came at a cost, as winger Zach Hyman suffered a season-ending upper-body injury after he took a hit from Dallas forward Mason Marchment. Hyman had 11 points (five goals, six assists) and a league-leading 111 hits in 15 playoff games for the Oilers while playing on the top line.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch now has an important roster decision to make ahead of Game 5. He could tap veteran forward Jeff Skinner, who hasn’t played since Game 1 of the opening round of the playoffs, on the shoulder as Hyman’s replacement. Or, he could elect to dress seven defensemen and activate Mattias Ekholm, who hasn’t played since April 11 due to an undisclosed injury but has been back practicing with the team since May 19.

It might not matter who the Oilers dress on Thursday if Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continues to play out of his mind. The center recorded another pair of assists in Game 4 to bring his points total to nine through the first four games of this series. He’s the first player in 37 years with multiple points in each of the first four games of a conference final, joining a select group of players including Wayne Gretzky. He’s -165 to record a single point and +300 to collect two or more points on Thursday.

You never know what you’re going to get from Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, but he’s been the best version of himself in this series, recording a stellar .976 five-on-five save percentage.

Calvin Pickard returned to duty in Game 4 for Edmonton, dressing as the backup goaltender after he missed a few games due to a lower-body injury. He’s 6-0 with a 2.84 GAA in these playoffs and is a viable replacement should Skinner falter on Thursday, or at some point during this series.

NHL teams that take a 3-1 lead in a playoff series go on to win the series 91% of the time. However, the Stars are 0-16 in series where they’ve trailed 3-1 and they forced a Game 7 just once in those 16 series (2007). Conversely, the Oilers have a 17-1 record all-time when holding a 3-1 series lead.
