It’s a star-studded affair when Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
These teams have been inconsistent this year based on their usual high standards, so it could prove an explosive matchup.
When looking through these two lineups, they are stacked with at least five of the NHL’s top players in McDavid, MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Leon Draisaitl, and Mikko Rantanen. These guys, along with strong supporting players, are prone to being on the scoresheet almost every night, which is why they both average three+ goals per game.
Neither team has been reliable defensively, as they are both bottom 10 in goals against average in the entire league. There is high potential for this game being an offensive shootout.
While they’ve been inconsistent overall, a recent stretch of play has the Oilers with three wins in their past four games. It is a team with high expectations, and they can certainly feel the momentum building.
They are the road team on the second half of a back-to-back, but the Avalanche are also playing in their second-straight game, and were forced to travel through the night.
In net, the edge also goes to Edmonton, as starter Stuart Skinner did not play last night, but will tend the crease in this one.
As for Colorado, they will either be playing struggling starter Alex Georgiev for the second-straight night, or Scott Wedgewood, who was just acquired the morning of the game and will be rushed to the rink.
Edmonton clearly has a strong roster filled with star talent and they should rise to the occasion and earn their fourth win in five games.
Draisaitl cannot be stopped when it comes to goalscoring. He currently leads the league in goals with 17, while he has scored in five-straight games, as well as in seven of the last nine.
As mentioned, there are question marks when it comes to goaltending and defense for the Avalanche organization, so the Oilers should certainly have many offensive chances which Draisaitl, in particular, can capitalize on.
