Nebraska freshman Dylan Raiola was named the team’s starting quarterback, head coach Matt Rhule announced Wednesday.
Raiola, 19, will be under center when Nebraska opens its season against UTEP on August 31.
The Arizona and Georgia native Raiola has been on scouts’ and college football fans’ radars for years. A five-star recruit out of Buford High School in Georgia, Raiola originally committed to Ohio State in May 2022 before flipping to Georgia, and then ultimately landing on Nebraska in December 2023.
Raiola threw for nearly 8,500 yards and 88 touchdowns in his high school career, per ESPN. The 6-foot-3 QB will bring much-needed arm talent to a Cornhuskers offense that ranked last in the Big Ten in passing yards and interceptions a year ago.
After opening the 2024 season against UTEP, Nebraska hosts Colorado, Northern Iowa, and Illinois before playing its first road game vs. Purdue on September 28.
Raiola is +10000 to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy. He can become the third freshman in history to win the Heisman, a feat accomplished only by Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel (2012) and Florida State’s Jameis Winston (2013).
