No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions QB Drew Allar will lead his team in its first-ever West Coast Big Ten game this weekend against USC.
The USC Trojans joined the Big Ten this offseason as part of nationwide conference realignment, and they joined along with three other West Coast teams: Oregon, UCLA, and Washington.
Penn State is 2-0 in the conference with wins over then-No. 19 Illinois and UCLA, while USC is 1-2 in the conference and lost both of its road games so far, to then-No. 18 Michigan in Week 3 and to Minnesota in Week 5 which saw the Trojans fall out of the AP Top 25.
While the Nittany Lions defense ranks eighth out of 134 Division I teams in points allowed per game (11.4), Allar's proficiency in the pocket and beyond has been a driving factor in the team's success so far.
The second-year starter has completed 70.9 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards and a 9-1 TD-INT ratio, and his average of 15.1 yards per catch leads the Big Ten. Plus, he has rushed the ball 26 times for 89 yards and three scores.
The main questions surrounding Allar entering this season were about his arm strength after he spent the 2023 season getting the ball out of his hand quickly for small gains.
As stated, he leads the conference in yards per catch this time around, and if he continues that trend against USC this weekend, he might join the conversation when it comes to College Football's elite quarterbacks.
