The Red Wings (5-5-1) are set to visit the Blackhawks (5-7-1) in Chicago after Dylan Larkin’s two-goal performance lifted Detroit over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
This win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Red Wings, who began the season with a 4-3 record. Currently, Detroit is 2-2 on the road, while Chicago has struggled at home with a 1-3 record. The Red Wings are 6-4 straight up versus Chicago in the last 10 meetings, including three consecutive victories.
Cam Talbot (3-1-1) will make his sixth start in net for Detroit on Wednesday. He ranks fifth in save percentage (.923) among goaltenders who have faced at least 200 unblocked shot attempts. The Blackhawks are likely to start either Petr Mrazek or backup Arvid Soderblom, potentially opting for Soderblom due to the schedule, as Chicago will play a second game against the Stars in Dallas on Thursday.
Mrazek (4-6-0) has been fine this season, posting a .900 save percentage and a 3.00 goals against average. Meanwhile, Soderblom (1-1-1) just earned his first win of the season, stopping 37 of 39 shots versus the Anaheim Ducks over the weekend.
The 25-year-old has a .927 save percentage, but he’s only played three games, and last season, he was one of the worst goaltenders in the league. Still, the tandem has conceded three or fewer goals in all but three games this season which is a big improvement from last year.
Connor Bedard has faced some tough luck this season. While he's shooting more frequently than he did as a rookie, his scoring rate has dropped to just 6.7 percent, down from 10.7 percent last season. Bedard has recorded two points in his two career games against Detroit but has yet to score against the Red Wings and has only three goals this season.
However, with Detroit allowing the second-most shots in the league so far, the 19-year-old should have a solid opportunity to find the back of the net on Wednesday.
