Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder: 2024 NBA Playoffs second-round series odds

The Dallas Mavericks and top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, two teams that boast a MVP finalist, meet in the second round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

The Thunder are one of the NBA's best defensive teams - thanks to Luguentz Dort patrolling the perimeter and Chet Holmgren protecting the rim - and are led by their MVP finalist, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and 2024 Coach of the Year winner Mark Daigneault.

The Mavericks' MVP finalist is Luka Doncic and he's joined by Kyrie Irving to form one of the league's most lethal guard duos. Dallas shoots plenty of threes and takes care of the ball well.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder playoff history

The Mavericks and Thunder have met in 23 playoff games over five different series, dating back to when the Thunder were known as the Seattle SuperSonics.

The teams first met in the first round of the 1984 NBA Playoffs, where the Mavericks won the best-of-five series in five games thanks to the play of Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman. The Sonics were led by Gus Williams and Jack Sikma.

They met again three seasons later in the first round, and the Sonics won in four games. Dale Ellis, Tom Chambers and Xavier McDaniel each averaged over 20 points for Seattle while Blackman and Aguirre led five Mavericks who averaged double-digit points for the series.

The teams did not meet again until 2011, the third season of the OKC Thunder's existence after the move from Seattle. OKC was led by Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden and they lost in five games to the Dirk Nowitzki-led Mavericks in the Conference Finals ahead of the Mavs' NBA Finals win over LeBron James' Miami Heat.

Dallas and Oklahoma City met again in the first round of the following season's playoffs, and the Thunder got revenge in 2012 with a sweep. Durant, Westbrook and Harden led the team over Nowitzki and the experienced Mavs, but the Thunder fell in five games to the Heat in the Finals that year.

The most recent postseason meeting between Dallas and OKC was in the 2016 first round, where the Thunder won 4-1. Harden had already left the Thunder, but this was the team's last playoff campaign with both Durant and Westbrook, who led the series in scoring with 26 points per game each.
