Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics Game 1: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics are the last teams standing, with Game 1 of the NBA Finals set to tip off at 8:30 PM ET on Thursday, June 6.

While Boston has been on a crash course to win the Eastern Conference, Dallas had to take down a strong Clippers team before dismantling the #1 Thunder and #3 Timberwolves to reach their first Finals since 2011.

Both teams deserve to play for an NBA Championship, but only one of the teams will earn the right to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics Game 1 betting picks and predictions

Celtics -6.5 (-110)

The Boston Celtics have been the favorites to win the NBA Finals since the start of the season, but Celtics fans will be wary heading into Game 1.

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will face a five-headed monster in Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White and Jrue Holiday, and this series will come down to whether Dallas’ star duo can continue to play at their very best for at least four games.

It will be interesting to see how Boston matches up with Dallas on defense, but I expect Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown to guard Doncic, while Jrue Holiday and Derrick White will take turns guarding Irving.

These two teams met twice during the regular season, and the Celtics won the first meeting in Dallas 119-110 before taking care of business in the second game in impressive fashion at the TD Garden, winning 138-110.

The Celtics have played well in Game 1s this postseason, as they took down the Miami Heat 114-94, Cleveland Cavaliers 120-95 and Indiana Pacers 133-128.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are just 1-2 in Game 1s in these playoffs, losing 109-97 to the Los Angeles Clippers and 117-95 to the Oklahoma City Thunder before upsetting the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-105. Although the Mavs won each of those series, they haven’t come out of the gates at their best.

The Celtics will get Kristaps Porzingis back for the Finals, and his impact cannot be understated. The Latvian allows the Celtics to stretch the floor, removing the Mavs rim protectors from the paint. If Derrick Lively and Daniel Gafford struggle to stop Porzingis, the Celtics should win easily.

Additionally, this Boston team is nearly unbeatable when they’re scoring early and often. Dating back to the regular season, the Celtics have won 12 straight games and are 65-7 when they’ve scored 110 points or more. When scoring fewer than 110, the Celtics are just 11-13.

So long as Boston can reach 110 points or more, they will win this game, and I’ll be backing the Celtics -6.5 at -110 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Over 214.5 Total Points (-100)

The second one of my Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics predictions goes hand-in-hand with my first, as I expect Boston to score plenty of points and push this total Over 214.5 Points. A lot can be said about both of these teams’ defenses, as Boston is third (101.3 PPG) and Dallas is sixth (103.9 PPG) in points allowed per game during this postseason.

However, both teams are coming off five+ days of rest, and I expect their shooters to be ready.

Boston has scored early and often this postseason, as they’re averaging 122.3 PPG in Game 1 of the playoffs so far. Although they haven’t played since May 27, Joe Mazzulla will have had his team practicing extremely hard, as they will not want to fall in the Finals for the second time in three seasons.

The total has gone over in five of Boston’s last six games and in six of their last seven contests at home.

For Dallas, the trends are similar, as five of their last six games went over the total, and four of the last five contests in which they’ve been the underdog finished over.

Overall, I expect a fast-paced Game 1, leading both teams to combine for 215+ points.

Jayson Tatum Over 26.5 Points (-120)

Jayson Tatum will play in his second NBA Finals in three seasons, and I expect the Duke product to come up big.

The Mavericks don’t have a great defender to put on Tatum and will likely throw P.J. Washington on him.

Washington wasn’t playing for Dallas when they faced Boston for the first time this season, but he started in the second meeting between the teams. In those games, Tatum finished with 39 and 32 points.
