Dallas Cowboys Next Head Coach Odds: Brian Schottenheimer the favorite

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones failed to agree with former head coach Mike McCarthy on a new contract, so the team has joined the search for a new head coach.

The Cowboys have had just nine coaches in history, but the previous six have not won an NFL Championship.

Each of Dallas' last four head coaches got at least three seasons to make their mark. Since 2000, the longest-tenured coach under Jones was Jason Garrett, who went 85-67, won the 2016 Coach of the Year Award, and won the NFC East three times.

This time around, Jones will hope he can find the leader to get this team at least into the playoffs and perhaps to its first championship since the 1995 season.

Here, we'll take a look at the odds to become the next Dallas Cowboys head coach.

Brian Schottenheimer, the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator since 2023, is the -175 favorite to be promoted to the head coaching job.

Schottenheimer has no head coaching experience, but he got his first OC job in 2006 and has spent 14 seasons in that role with various teams at the professional level. Last season, his first in the role, he led Dallas to have the NFL's highest-scoring offense.

Kellen Moore, the current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator and former Cowboys OC, is the second-favorite to get the Cowboys' head coaching job at +300.

Moore's odds shortened after he had an interview with the Cowboys on Friday, January 17th, just two days before helping the Eagles to a Divisional Round win over the Los Angeles Rams. The OC was the architect of Philly's league-best rushing offense which saw Saquon Barkley run for over 2,000 yards.

Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is the +600 third-favorite to get the job. Saleh went 20-36 in four seasons as Jets coach and, when he was the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, he led them to allow the third-fewest points in the 2019 season.

Colorado Buffaloes head coach and Cowboys legend Deion 'Coach Prime' Sanders is now the +700 fourth-favorite to get the job, and his odds are slightly longer than his opening price of +150.

Sanders spoke to Jones about the role, and after the conversation, Sanders said "To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it's intriguing... I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, process it, and think about it, it's intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community."

As for his coaching prowess, Sanders went 4-8 in his first season in Boulder before going 9-4 this past season. Plus, Sanders surrounded himself with assistants, coordinators and position coaches with plenty of NFL experience, showing he knows how to build a strong coaching staff.

Kliff Kingsbury, the Washington Commanders OC who went 28-37-1 in four years as Arizona Cardinals head coach, is next in the market at +1000. The QB whisperer played an instrumental role in QB Jayden Daniels' rookie season, and he's helped lead the team to the NFC Championship.

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is a newcomer among the favorites at +1200 after his team was eliminated from the playoffs.

Glenn navigated injuries to lead the Lions to the NFL's seventh-ranked scoring defense, and the Cowboys may covet his ability to adjust after the team dealt with its own share of injuries in 2024.

Further back in the market, from 20/1 to 60/1, are Lions OC Ben Johnson, former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores, Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Liam Coen, and University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick.
