Concacaf Champions Cup: Competition Overview

The 61st edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup is underway, and clubs across North and Central America battling for regional supremacy and a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup.

The Concacaf Champions Cup is the premier tournament for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and acts as a path for regional teams to compete on the global stage.

The Cup features many tightly contested MLS vs. Liga MX matchups, including the Philadelphia Union vs. Club America in the Round of 16.

The winner of the 2026 tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 2029 Club World Cup, and the 2026 Intercontinental Cup.

Liga MX club Cruz Azul won their seventh Concacaf Champions Cup trophy in club history last season by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 in the Final.

Concacaf Champions Cup Format

The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup is an expanded version of the tournament, and features 27 teams in a five-round knockout style tournament.

Each round, with the exception of the final, will be played across two legs. This format allows each team to play one match at home, and one away, and the winner on aggregate (combined score of both legs) moves on.

If a tie is level on aggregate after both legs, the second leg will feature extra time and eventually a penalty shootout.

The tournament features Round One, the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final.

Concacaf Champions Cup Qualification

Teams qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup by finishing highly in their domestic leagues, and regional club cups.

Teams can earn qualification via MLS, Liga MX, Canadian Premier League, Caribbean Cup, and the Central American Cup.
