The Columbus Crew and Atlanta United, clubs who have won three of the last six MLS Cup finals, face off over the first weekend of the 2024 MLS season.

The Crew are the defending MLS Cup champions thanks to a 2-1 win over Los Angeles FC on December 9.

Atlanta, on the other hand, is trying to return to the level it reached when finishing in the league's top five places and winning an MLS Cup in its first three years in the league from 2017 to 2019.

Atlanta and Columbus were the league's most prolific attacks last season, scoring 64 and 63 team goals, respectively. They also held the most possession: Columbus kept the ball 57.1 percent of the time while Atlanta held it for 55.6 percent of its games on average.

Atlanta United attackers Giorgios Giakoumakis and Thiago Almada combined for 44 goal contributions last season.

Columbus Crew forward Juan 'Cucho' Hernandez scored 16 goals and added seven assists in 27 matches last season, and his 16 goals were fewer than his 20.2 expected goals.

Diego Rossi, the top goalscorer in MLS in 2020 with LAFC, joined Columbus midway through last season and scored three goals and two assists in 10 regular season matches. In the playoffs, Rossi scored the equalizing goal to send the Eastern Conference Final into overtime and he totaled two goals and three assists in the postseason.

The Crew had the league's second-best expected goals differential at +16.4, and their actual goal differential was even better at +21, the best in the league. Atlanta had a +2.8 expected goal differential and a +13 actual goal differential.

Atlanta had the joint 12th-fewest yellow cards last year with 73; Columbus had the joint-sixth-fewest with 61.

The Crew met Atlanta in the first round of last season's MLS Cup playoffs, which was the first year of a best-of-three format. Columbus won the first match 2-0, Atlanta won the second 4-2, and the Crew took the decider by a 4-2 score.
