Colorado State won its play-in game to advance to an opening-round matchup against No. 7 Texas.

Texas lost in the second round of the Big 12 tournament and finished with a 9-9 conference record, but a 20-12 overall record and wins over strong teams in Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma helped strengthen their case to qualify for the tournament.

The Colorado State Rams beat Virginia in the play-in round, holding the Cavaliers to just 14 first-half points and 42 points for the game. The Rams lost to eventual winners New Mexico in the semifinals of the Mountain West conference tournament, but regular season victories over Creighton, Nevada, Utah State and San Diego State helped them qualify.
