Season two of head coach Deion Sanders' tenure with the Colorado Buffaloes is around the corner, and the main question is whether or not they can beat last season's 4-8 record.
After shocking the nation to start the 2023 season with a Week 1 win over TCU - which had been to the College Football Playoff the previous season - the Buffaloes went on a downward spiral as the offensive line was unable to protect star QB Shedeur Sanders, who played much of the season with a back injury.
Coach Prime saw over 40 players leave the program with over 40 new faces taking their place. While it's not the 80-player exodus that preceded his first season in Boulder, it's still plenty of turnover for one offseason.
Still, the Buffs have two players among the 30 with the shortest odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Shedeur Sanders is +2500 and two-way sensation Travis Hunter is +5000.
Will the Buffaloes fare any better than they did last season? Could they even snag one of the 12 spots in the new College Football Playoff format?
Let's take a look at Colorado's odds before their college football season gets underway against North Dakota State on Thursday, August 29.
Colorado won four games last season, and they play a similarly difficult 12-game schedule this year. Notable opponents include No. 18 Kansas State, No. 21 Arizona, No. 12 Utah, No. 22 Kansas and No. 17 Oklahoma State.
The 2024 season will be Colorado's first in the Big 12 after moving from the Pac-12, and expectations are tempered for the Buffaloes' first season. While traditional Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma moved to the SEC, Colorado will still need to get past Utah, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Arizona and more.
Colorado's price is the 11th-shortest in the 16-team conference.
The Buffaloes have some top-end talent in Sanders and Hunter, but the rest of the team, at least ahead of the 2024 season, does not project to reach the same standard.
Sanders was sacked 52 times last year, and while the program brought in a few offensive linemen with Power Five experience, it's not likely that it will be a Playoff-level unit this season. The team will also need to improve upon its 34.8 points allowed per game from last year.
Colorado is decidedly not among the favorites to win the National Championship, even though the team has two players in Sanders and Hunter who could be top-five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite the hype surrounding the program, this season appears to be another step in the process of building the program up to Coach Prime's standards.
