Coco Gauff, the reigning US Open champion on the women's side, has the third-shortest odds to win the 2024 edition which would see her become the first woman to win it back-to-back in a decade.
Gauff enters the tournament at +850 to win outright.
Only Aryna Sabalenka (+210) and Iga Swiatek (+350) have shorter odds, with Elena Rybakina (+800) just behind her.
The 20-year-old current World No. 3 player begins her title defense against Varvara Gracheva, who is ranked 66th in the world and was defeated by Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round of the Olympics.
In last year's US Open final, Gauff defeated Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Gauff had beaten Caroline Wozniaki in the round of 16, Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals and Karolina Muchova in the semifinals to move on to face Sabalenka.
So far in 2024, Gauff has a 36-13 win-loss record and she is 9-6 on hard courts this year. Her biggest win on the surface since the year began came against Elise Mertens, the World No. 24, in straight sets at Indian Wells in California.
Gauff is aggressive with her serve. She leads all players on the WTA tour in double faults with 277, but it's worth noting that she has played the fifth-most matches this year with 49 while winning 71.4 percent of points with her first serve, the eight-highest mark on the tour.
That said, her 172 aces is good for 13th on the tour but is below a handful of players who have played far fewer matches. Luckily for Gauff, she's 10th on the tour with a 48.6 percent return point win rate and 11th with a 45.8 percent return game win rate.
Gauff will look to get her serve rolling early in an effort to set herself up for a second consecutive US Open success.
