Club Brugge’s incredible UEFA Champions League run continues when it hosts Aston Villa in the first leg of the Round of 16 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Belgian side finished 24th in the league phase, earning the final spot in the Round of 32 playoff on goal difference over Dinamo Zagreb. They then knocked out reigning UEFA Europa League champions Atalanta 5-2 on aggregate in the Round of 32.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa finished 8th in the league phase, earning a bye into the Round of 16. One of their two losses in the league phase came against Club Brugge on November 6, 2024.
In that game, the Belgian side earned a penalty early in the second half when Aston Villa center back Tyrone Mings picked up a ball that was passed to him by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The act was ruled a handball in the penalty area, which Hans Vanaken put away for the game’s only goal.
Four months later, the two sides will meet again with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
