Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics: 2024 NBA Playoffs second-round series odds

The NBA's best team in the 2024 regular season, the Boston Celtics, face a Cleveland Cavaliers team with plenty of height and scoring ability in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Celtics, under head coach Joe Mazzulla, have developed an offense based on spacing in the half-court while having enough depth to put five legitimate scoring threats on the court at a time.

Coach JB Bickerstaff's Cavaliers are a tough defensive team as they start two big men in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and shooting guard Donovan Mitchell leads the team on offense.

The Celtics beat the Miami Heat in five games to advance to the second round while the Cavaliers won their first-round series against the Orlando Magic in seven games to get to this point.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics playoff history

The Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers have met in 46 playoff games over eight series in the history of the two franchises.

Boston beat Cleveland in six games in the first series between the two teams, the 1976 Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics were led by Jo Jo White, John Havlicek and Dave Cowens while the Cavs had Jim Cleamons and Austin Carr.

The Celtics won the second series between the teams in four games in the then-best-of-five 1985 first round. Boston's Larry Bird led all scorers in three of the four games, while Cleveland's World B. Free led his team in scoring.

Cleveland won the next series between the teams, the 1992 Eastern Conference Semifinals, in seven games. Brad Daugherty, Mark Price and Larry Nance led the Cavs over Kevin McHale and Reggie Lewis' Celtics.

The teams next met in the 2008 second round, which Boston won in seven games en route to winning a championship. Ray Allen went cold for the Celtics, but Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce carried most of the weight to beat a 23-year-old LeBron James and the Cavs.

In the 2015 first round, Cleveland swept the Celtics on the way to losing to the Golden State Warriors in the Finals. In this series, the trio of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love overcame the Isaiah Thomas-led Celtics in a series where each game was decided by eight points or more.

The Cavs beat the Celtics in five games in the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals. James, Love and Irving led the way again, this time beating a well-rounded Boston team with Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford and Avery Bradley contributing heavily.

The most recent series between the teams was in the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, where Cleveland won in seven games after Boston built up a 2-0 lead. James and Love were the only players to average double-figure scoring for the Cavs while five players averaged at least 10 points for the Celtics.
