One of the NFL’s most exciting teams through four weeks, the Washington Commanders look to build on a 3-1 start when hosting the Cleveland Browns in Week 5.
Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels has been a record-setting revelation to start his NFL career.
The No. 2 overall pick has been historically accurate, completing 82.1% of his passes on the season so far, the highest completion percentage of any QB in league history through four games (min. 75 attempts). Daniels also became this first QB in NFL history record back-to-back games with 85% or higher completion percentage (min. 15 attempts per game) against the Bengals and Cardinals in Weeks 3 and 4.
Now, Dan Quinn’s team welcomes the 1-3 Browns to town, and Deshaun Watson and company have something to prove.
The Commanders and Browns have a common opponent already this season – the New York Giants – who the Commanders beat, 21-18, and the Browns lost to, 21-15.

On Jayden Daniels: "The things that have been so impressive to me are, like I said before, his ability to stay in the process, keep the focus where to go with the read. So, I wouldn't say I didn't have a label for it to begin with, but it's definitely one of the things that I admire about a lot of this, so much of this comes from his work on the field, off the field. He really puts it in and that's why so many of his teammates would absolutely just fight for him at the drop of a hat because they know how hard he's also working to execute the offense too."
Is Quinn surprised with the Commanders' fast start? "I'm not surprised. I knew the connection would be the number one thing for us to see if we could play well, how long that would take, how connected this team could get on all three phases. And so the support of one another, all of those things, that's to me, the faster we could do that. And I thought the team's done a good job of fast tracking the feeling out process, putting agendas to the side, absolutely all-out effort."
On Browns matchup: "I think one thing that I really think about Cleveland that first comes to mind [is] this is a tough and resilient group. I think they kind of showed that last year to go through quarterback changes and injuries and had some of that through the starting part of this year. And so I think that's one of the things that I look at first. Man, this is a tough and resilient group, and we know we'll get their best coming in this one ready to fight for it and they'll get ours as well."
On Daniels' leadership: “He's very much authentically himself. And that to me is one of the very best ways to lead. That he's not trying to do it in some other fashion. Like I said, maybe on Monday after a PAT, you just saw him and Wagner meeting guys as they're coming off the field after an extra point. That's an example of his support and the way that he leans into others to help them get better."
On the next step in his growth: "I think one thing that I really think about Cleveland that first comes to mind [is] this is a tough and resilient group. I think they kind of showed that last year to go through quarterback changes and injuries and had some of that through the starting part of this year. And so I think that's one of the things that I look at first. Man, this is a tough and resilient group, and we know we'll get their best coming in this one ready to fight for it and they'll get ours as well.
On collaboration with OC Kliff Kingsbury: "Yeah, I mean, Kliff is very open-minded. Anything that he feels is going to work, he'll try it out, man. And kudos to Kliff being selfless because, obviously, he could be that type of person like, 'Man, this is my system, this is how we're going to run it. This is how we're going to do things.' But nah, he just back there. He gives us the freedom to go out there and play ball."
On facing the Browns defense: “Yeah, it is a very good defense. They have good players out there on the edge. I mean, obviously people know who they have, [DE] Myles Garrett and what he's done in this league. And you got some other guys up front, very good linebackers that like to play downhill, very fast. And then outside, the corners, man, they believe in them a lot and they're good players. So, it'd be a good test for us.”
On what makes Daniels' deep ball so effective: "He works at it. That's all I can say. I mean, he stays after and he practices those throws and he gets his receivers day in, day out. And he's got great command, have a great touch. And so I just think that's one of those things you're only gonna get good if you continue to practice it and work at it and get the timing with your guys, and he's been doing that."
On what about the offensive line has pleased him the most: "I would say just the way they play together. I think we know they weren't the most hyped up to start the season, I should say. But they've really taken pride in their approach as a unit and their physical nature and finishing plays and toughness and their communication is awesome."
On what he has seen from the Cleveland Browns' cornerbacks: "Yeah, they're good players. [Cleveland Browns CB Denzel] Ward's one of the top guys in the league and he has been, and they ask him to play a lot of man coverage and those guys have held up and done a nice job. It's a really good defense, aggressive style like [Cleveland Browns Defensive Coordinator] Coach Schwartz has been throughout his career and it'll be a huge challenge."
