Claressa Shields faces Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on Saturday night in Detroit, with the self-styled ‘GWOAT’ looking to etch her name even further into boxing folklore.
Shields, already a three-weight world champion and two-weight undisputed champion, seeks titles in her fourth and fifth weight classes when she challenges for Lepage-Joanisse’s WBC heavyweight title; with the vacant WBO light-heavyweight title also at stake. A unique state-of-play that, in truth, does more to highlight the issues with depth in the female code than prove a valid measure of Shields’ undoubted greatness.
As is often the case in her fights, Shields is a prohibitive favorite to win outright and, with just two stoppages in her perfect 14-fight career so far, is odds-on at -275 to win by Decision/Technical Decision.
Despite Shields to win by KO/TKO being priced at a tempting 2/1, I feel Lepage-Joanisse being more acclimatized to boxing at a higher weight, and Shields’ tendency to coast in the two-minute round format should see the Canadian hear the final bell.
