UCONN vs. Michigan Predictions

Seven months on from meeting for the national championship, the fourth-ranked UConn Huskies and No. 16 Michigan Wolverines square off again at TD Garden in Boston on Friday night.

Michigan defeated UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis on April 6 to capture the national championship.

Seemingly the norm these days in major men’s college basketball, both teams have undergone significant roster changes since then, but Friday’s matchup offers an early opportunity to measure two potential title contenders.

UConn (1-0) opened its season Monday with an impressive 86-46 victory over Gardner-Webb.

Braylon Mullins scored 20 points, Duke transfer Nik Khamenia added 14, and Na'Jai Hines contributed 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Silas Demary Jr., the Big East preseason Player of the Year, scored only five points but finished with eight assists, eight rebounds and three steals.

Michigan (1-0) began its championship defense with an 84-68 victory over Oakland.

Roddy Gayle Jr. and Trey McKenney scored 17 points apiece, while Tennessee transfer J.P. Estrella recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds in his Wolverines debut.

UConn vs. Michigan college basketball betting picks

Michigan +7.5 (-116)

UConn enters as the favorite, and there are good reasons for that.

Coach Dan Hurley has guided the Huskies to two national championships in the past four seasons. They finished 34-6 last year and return several important contributors from the team that reached April's championship game.

Mullins and Demary provide experience in the backcourt, while the additions of Khamenia and Hines give UConn valuable depth.

The Huskies also have a favorable history at TD Garden. They won the 2024 East Regional there and defeated BYU, then ranked seventh, in Boston last November, 86-84.

However, Michigan should not be overlooked simply because its roster looks different.

Coach Dusty May must replace three NBA lottery picks: Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara.

Those departures represent considerable losses in scoring, rebounding and interior defense. Nevertheless, Michigan returns seven players from its championship team, including preseason All-Big Ten selections Elliot Cadeau and McKenney.

The Wolverines have also added four transfers and six freshmen.

Estrella's immediate impact against Oakland was particularly encouraging. His rebounding and interior scoring could help compensate for the departures of Johnson and Mara.

Cadeau remains an important playmaker, while McKenney gives Michigan another reliable offensive option.

The Wolverines also have confidence from their championship victory, although last season's result should not be treated as a direct prediction for two substantially different rosters.

Michigan has won three of the five all-time meetings between these programs.

UConn's defense was outstanding against Gardner-Webb, holding the Runnin' Bulldogs to 25.5% shooting and winning the rebounding battle by 18.

But Michigan presents a much more difficult challenge, particularly with its combination of experienced guards and new frontcourt contributors.

Look for the Huskies to have opportunities to win, but Michigan has enough talent and experience to keep this contest close.

Under 144.5 (-110)

Both teams scored comfortably in their season openers, but Friday's matchup should provide a considerably tougher offensive test.

UConn scored 86 points against Gardner-Webb, while Michigan produced 84 against Oakland.

However, neither of those inferior opponents possess the defensive talent these nationally ranked teams will face on Friday.

The Huskies allowed only 46 points Monday, demonstrating the defensive intensity that has become a hallmark of Hurley's program.

Hines supplied three blocks and 12 rebounds, while Demary contributed three steals. UConn also forced Gardner-Webb into an extremely inefficient shooting performance.

Michigan's defense faces questions after losing Mara and Johnson, but Estrella's 12 rebounds against Oakland suggest the Wolverines have options inside.

The previous championship meeting produced only 132 combined points, with Michigan winning 69-63.

That game featured different personnel and much higher stakes, so it is not necessarily a reliable indicator of Friday's scoring.

Still, both coaches understand the importance of controlling possessions against elite opposition.

Michigan cannot afford to let UConn dominate the offensive glass, while the Huskies must prevent Cadeau from creating easy scoring opportunities in transition.

An early-season matchup between two retooled contenders could also feature inconsistent shooting and stretches of deliberate half-court offense.

Expect competitive defense and extended possessions to keep the combined score below that number.
