Montreal missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, and the pressure has only ramped up after the Columbus Blue Jackets picked up a regulation win Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The Canadiens can still punch their ticket to the postseason by earning at least one point Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. If they don’t, their fate will depend on the outcome of Thursday’s game between the Blue Jackets and New York Islanders.

Carolina is locked into a first-round matchup with the New Jersey Devils and has nothing to play for in terms of standings. That said, the Hurricanes haven’t announced whether they’ll rest any of their top players. With the Bell Centre expected to be rocking and the stakes sky-high for Montreal, this could serve as a perfect tune-up before the playoffs.

The season series is tied 1–1, with Montreal winning 4–0 at home on Feb. 25 and Carolina responding with a 4–1 win on March 28. That snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Canadiens against the Hurricanes dating back to 2020. Still, I’m not as focused on picking a side as I am on this one player prop.

Ivan Demidov, the fifth overall pick in 2024, turned heads in his NHL debut with a goal on three shots and an assist. But don’t overlook Nick Suzuki. The Canadiens captain has scored in eight of his last 15 games and is poised to log heavy minutes in what amounts to a must-win situation.
