The Carolina Hurricanes have made the playoffs in all six of head coach Rod Brind'Amour's seasons at the helm, and they enter the 2024/25 NHL season among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
The 'Canes lost in the second round of last season's playoffs, losing in six games to the New York Rangers.
In the 2023/24 regular season, this team ranked fourth in fewest goals allowed and ended the season seventh in goals scored. In the advanced stats, though, the Hurricanes were one of the NHL's top teams.
Carolina ended last season third in expected goals percentage at 56.46 percent, meaning that over half of the expected goals (xG) created in a game featuring the Hurricanes were in favor of the team, per MoneyPuck.
And, in terms of xG on defense, the 'Canes allowed a league-low 220.48 xG on the season. That breaks down to 2.65 xG against per game, and the 'Canes created 3.44 xG per game on offense which ranked sixth in the league.
The Hurricanes prevent goals in many different ways. Jaccob Slavin ranked second among defensemen in takeaways, and Jalen Chatfield and Dmitry Orlov ranked in the top five in xG against per 60 minutes.
Simply put, the Hurricanes do not allow their opponents any easy looks at goal, and if they did, goaltenders Pyotr Kochetkov (.911 save percentage, 2.33 goals against average in 42 games in 2023/24) and Frederik Anderson (.932 save percentage, 1.84 GAA in 16 games) are certainly capable of stopping shots.
Offensively, this team had four players surpass 20 goals and another eight players reach double-digit goals. Sebastian Aho led the team with 36 goals, followed by Seth Jarvis who had 33.
While defensemen Brady Skjei and Brett Pesce departed for the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils respectively this offseason, Carolina replaced them with Shayne Gostisbehere and Sean Walker.
Carolina also signed key players Chatfield, Jarvis and Martin Necas to contract extensions.
Ahead of a year in which Carolina will want to progress further in the playoffs while seeing the team's young players step into key roles, let's look at the team's odds in key markets.
