Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford: Fight date, ring walk time, how to watch, undercard

Undisputed middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will step into the ring with a top-quality opponent for the first time in a long time when he puts his belts on the line against Terence Crawford.

Alvarez's last match against a top-level opponent was in 2022, when he stepped up to light heavyweight to challenge Dmitry Bivol for the WBA championship and lost via unanimous decision.

Crawford, still undefeated at 41-0 with 31 knockouts, will have had over a year away from the ring when he puts on his gloves for this fight. His last bout was a unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov on August 3rd, 2024, and it was the first time since 2018 that an opponent went the distance against him.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford titles at stake

Alvarez's undisputed middleweight championship will be at stake in Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford.

Canelo Alvarez record

63-2-2 (39 KOs)

Canelo Alvarez has a glittering career record at the age of 34, and he has fought against some premier talent — such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. — throughout his career.

But he has not stopped an opponent inside the distance since 2021, and his last fight against a top-level opponent was a win over a then-40-year-old Gennady Golovkin in May 2022 in their third meeting.

Alvarez suffered the first loss of his career in his 44th career fight, when he took on Mayweather in September 2013. The result was a mixed decision win for Mayweather, in which he won Alvarez's light middleweight title.

He won his next seven fights after that loss, which included victories over Erislandy Lara, James Kirland, Cotto, Amir Khan, Liam Smith, and Chavez Jr. He beat Cotto and Smith for two middleweight belts and one light middleweight belt, respectively.

After beating Chavez Jr., he fought Golovkin, who had a 37-0 record (33 KOs) at the time they met. The two fought to a split decision draw before meeting again one year later, where Golovkin won via mixed decision to win the middleweight championship.

Alvarez then moved to the super middleweight division. He beat Rocky Fielding for the WBA title in 2018, beat Daniel Jacobs for the IBF belt in 2019, and then became the undisputed champion at super middleweight when he beat Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO belt in 2021.

Since then, he has successfully defended the undisputed super middleweight title seven times. His one loss since becoming champion was in a different division, when he lost to Dmitry Bivol via unanimous decision for the WBA light heavyweight title in 2022.

Terence Crawford record

41-0 (31 KOs)

Terence 'Bud' Crawford is three years older than Alvarez, but the Mexican superstar has been much more active than his opponent. That being said, Crawford has been a champion in four divisions: lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight.

He won his first title — the WBO lightweight belt — in 2014 with a ninth-round knockout win over Yuriorkis Gamboa. He then beat Ray Beltran for The Ring magazine's lightweight belt and beat Thomas Dulorme for the WBO light welterweight belt.

In 2016, Bud beat Viktor Postol for the WBC and The Ring light welterweight titles, unifying the belts and becoming the lineal division champion.

The following year, Crawford became the light welterweight undisputed champion by beating Julius Indongo via third-round KO to claim the WBA and IBF belts.

In his next fight, he moved up to welterweight and beat Jeff Horn for the WBO belt via ninth-round KO. He then successfully retained it in his next six bouts, which included talented opponents such as Jose Benavidez Jr., Amir Khan, and Kell Brook.

He became the undisputed welterweight champion with his ninth-round TKO win over Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023, and he stepped up in weight yet again in 2024 as he beat Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision for the WBA and WBO interim light middleweight titles.
