Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez returns this weekend as he defends his WBA/WBC/WBO super-middleweight titles against unbeaten contender Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas.
As expected, Mexican icon Álvarez enters the bout as a colossal favorite (-2000 ML) and for good reason. His dominant win over previously-unbeaten Jaime Munguía in May showed that even at 34-years-old he still has plenty left to tackle some of the sport’s young guns.
The question is, how will ‘Canelo’ win? We haven’t seen a stoppage from him since an eleventh round TKO of Caleb Plant back in November 2021, but in Berlanga he faces an opponent who, it would appear, is significantly out-gunned.
Despite a shiny, unblemished record consisting of 22 wins and no losses, Berlanga is yet to face an opponent anywhere near the level of ‘Canelo’. Though sixteen first round KOs are not to be sniffed at, Berlanga’s power has dried up dramatically as he’s moved through the levels and, in Álvarez, he faces arguably the best chin in the entire sport. In short, even a puncher’s chance feels generous.
In his last three outings, Álvarez has scored knockdowns in the ‘middle rounds’ of the fight; he dropped Munguia in the fourth, Jermell Charlo fell in the seventh and John Ryder was decked in the fifth. All three opponents were savvy and experienced enough to survive and hear the final bell - I don’t believe Berlanga is capable of doing that. The New Jersey-native is wide open defensively and hasn’t shown the sturdiest set of whiskers in the past, having been hurt on several occasions at a much lower level.
I feel ‘Canelo’ will have a look at what Berlanga has to offer in the opening exchanges, but will ultimately find the target sooner rather than later. I feel Berlanga’s inexperience and aggression will work against him and see Álvarez closing the show before the end of the eighth round.
