Calgary and Utah started the season strong, with the Flames at 5-0-1 and Utah at 3-0-0.
Then came the reality check. Calgary has since dropped three straight games, including a 5-0 blowout loss to the Golden Knights in Vegas.
Utah is currently on a four-game skid, with their latest setback an overtime loss to the previously winless San Jose Sharks, making them the fourth team this season to blow a three-goal lead in the third period.
Based on regular season points projections, Utah (87.5) and Calgary (84.5) should make for a competitive matchup.
Home-ice advantage has not been strong for Utah. The Hockey Club is 2-3 straight-up, but they’ve lost their last three home games by a combined score of 14-5.
The Flames have also lost their last three games by a combined score of 14-5, but Dan Vladar started two of the three.
Should the Flames turn to Dustin Wolf, it’ll be easier to envision scenarios where they will be the team to end their losing streak on Wednesday given the injuries to Utah’s blue line. Calgary has been better than Utah offensively, but even more so defensively, with the latter ranking among the bottom-10 teams in goals against per 60 minutes. Then again, the Flames allow a lot of shots per game.
