Born in Ashland City, Tennessee, Plant excelled as an amateur fighter before turning professional in 2014, making his pro debut in May of that year when beating Travis Davidson by a first-round knockout.
The American began to make a name for himself, winning his next eight fights, five of them by stoppage, and then continued his unbeaten streak with smart wins over the likes of Tyrone Brunson, Juan De Angel and Rogelio Medina.
Plant became the IBF super middleweight champion in his 18th pro fight, beating Jose Uzcategui in January 2019, despite going into the bout as underdog.
Plant enhanced his reputation further with three consecutive defences of his belt against Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz and Caleb Truax before succumbing to his first defeat against the mighty Canelo Alvarez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in November 2021.
While that loss via TKO was deserved, Plant regrouped and came back with a victory over Anthony Dirrell in New York in October 2022 before going down to Benavidez in his most recent fight in Vegas in March 2023.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Great defence | Lack of action recently |
Durability | Struggles under pressure |
Plenty of big-fight experience | Too predictable |
McCumby was born in Yorkville, Illinois and, at 31, he is a year younger than his opponent.
McCumby's first professional fight of his 28 so far came against Sharieff Hayes in October 2010, when he won by KO, and he quickly established himself as a smart boxer with plenty of subsequent victories early in his career.
McCumby saw off the likes of Nathan Ortiz, Percey Givens, Eliseo Durazo, Eric Watkins and Ricardo Campillo as he continued to impress while maintaining his unbeaten record, although he was criticised for apparently not seeking out tougher fights at times.
McCumby recorded a career-best first-round knockout of Donovan George in November 2016, but it was converted to a No-Contest bout after McCumby reportedly tested positive for a banned substance.
A nine-month suspension followed, and it was claimed McCumby strongly considered retirement during that spell out of the ring as he also battled a serious knee injury.
However, he has since won five fights in a row upon his 2018 return, seeing off Jessie Nicklow, Felipe Romero, Vicente Martin Rodriguez, Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez and, most impressively, Chris Pearson in a ten-round decision last time out in January.
His upcoming clash with Plant represents by far his stiffest test, though, and it is no surprise to see McCumby rated as the huge underdog.
