On the week of the release of F1 the movie, it was fitting that viewers were treated to a blockbuster opening stint in the Austrian Grand Prix as the two contenders for the World Drivers’ Championship battled it out for the lead.
Lando Norris absorbed a tremendous amount of pressure from teammate Oscar Piastri in the opening 20 laps, but the Briton stayed cool at a scorching Red Bull Ring as both drivers tested the limits of an exceptionally fast McLaren.
Piastri struggled to make an impact in the second stint, and, with Max Verstappen being forced to retire after an opening-lap collision with Kimi Antonelli, Norris went on to win his third Grand Prix of the season and close the gap on his teammate to 15 points.
This weekend, the teams touch down at one of the most iconic circuits on the Formula One calendar for the British Grand Prix, with Norris and Piastri priced up as joint-favourites to take the chequered flag.
Victory in Austria will have done Norris’ confidence the world of good ahead of his home Grand Prix and the 25-year-old looks good value to claim his first win at Silverstone this weekend.
Both McLarens finished 20 seconds clear of Ferrari's third-placed Charles Leclerc in Austria, illustrating the scope of mechanical advantage the Woking-based team have over the field, and that should lead to another straight shootout between the two drivers in papaya.
Norris, who drove brilliantly all weekend in Austria, will be in high spirits as he returns to the United Kingdom and he has the added advantage of a solid record around Silverstone.
He finished on the podium here last season and came second the year before that, both times beating Piastri by over 12 seconds, while he hasn’t lost to his teammate in the British Grand Prix since his first season in Formula One in 2019.
Of course, Piastri has come a long way in the past 12 months but, given his performance in Austria and the extra motivation a roaring home crowd provides, Norris looks the most likely winner on Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton’s first season at Ferrari has been anything but smooth so far, but, despite yet another disagreement with his race engineer, he put in a solid showing at Austria and may be able to build on that as he returns to one of his favourite tracks.
The seven-time world champion cruised to a fourth-place finish at the Red Bull Ring in an upgraded Ferrari and he may have had a chance of challenging teammate Leclerc for a podium if not for a baffling strategy call from the pit wall.
If he can bring the same level of performance to Silverstone, he has a real chance of claiming his first podium finish in the red of Ferrari.
Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix a record nine times, one of which was last year's race.
Prior to his shock win this time last year, he had been on the podium just once all season and that extended a phenomenal record of podium finishes in front of his home crowd.
You have to go all the way back to 2013 to find the last British Grand Prix podium that didn’t contain Hamilton and last year's success was the 14th time he has finished in the top three at this track.
Gabriel Bortoleto took the majority of the plaudits in Austria as the rookie driver claimed his first points finish of the season, but it is Kick Sauber teammate Nico Hulkenberg who looks better value to add to their points tally at Silverstone.
After a dreadful start to the season, Kick Sauber appear much more at ease with their car over the past three races, with Hulkenberg’s shock fifth-place finish in Barcelona beginning a three-race streak of top-ten finishes for the German.
He was outpaced by Bortoleto last weekend, but he has a strong record at Silverstone, finishing in the points nine of the 11 times he has raced in the British Grand Prix, and he can use that experience to continue his scoring streak.
