Edward Vazquez is hoping he can make the most of his second chance at a world title fight when he squares up to Rafael Espinoza for the WBO featherweight belt in Las Vegas.
Vazquez's first world title bout didn't go the way he hoped as the judges awarded Joe Cordina a majority decision but he's got his eyes trained on victory this time despite facing up to the unbeaten Mexican title holder.
The WBO featherweight clash between Espinoza and Vasquez will take place on Sunday, May 4th, 2025.
The ring walks for Espinoza vs. Vasquez are expected to be at 10 PM ET/9 PM CT/7 PM PT.
The bout will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight between Espinoza and Vasquez will be shown on ESPN+ in the United States.
Espinoza's WBO featherweight title will be on the line when the pair step into the ring.
The undefeated Espinoza (26-0, 22 KOs) captured the WBO belt with a majority decision over Robeisy Ramirez in December 2023. He has made two successful defenses, dominating Sergio Chirino over four rounds last June and putting away Ramirez in six rounds in their December 2024 rematch in Phoenix, Arizona after Ramirez suggested he was suffering from double vision.
There is a significant height difference: Vazquez is listed at 5-foot-7, six inches shorter than Espinoza.
Espinoza has said previously he is seeking unifications in his division that counts Stephen Fulton (WBC), Angelo Leo (IBF) and Nick Ball (WBA) as champions, or else he will move up in weight.
Espinoza's ability to deliver combinations and creativity to go low to land an uppercut have proved potent weapons throughout his professional career, which began in 2013.
Vasquez (17-2, 4 KOs), has won two straight since the Cordina title bout 18 months ago, outpointing Daniel Bailey (13-1 career record) last May and stopping Kenneth Taylor (14-3-2 career record) in four rounds in October.
While the judges awarded Cordina a majority decision in his previous world title fight, Vazquez believed he had done enough to seize the IBF junior lightweight title on that Monaco night in November 2023.
He anticipates a stronger showing in Las Vegas, suggesting he is now a more seasoned boxer.
"I have the experience of being at the world title level, so I have that under my belt now," Vazquez said. "I'm just all-around more seasoned, and I think I'm smarter in terms of just the game in general."
