Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: Tale of the Tape

Jake Paul returns to the ring at the end of June with another match-up against one of the stars of yesteryear as he faces Mexican veteran Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

After outpointing former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson in November, Paul comes up against former WBC middleweight champion Chavez Jr in a cruiserweight bout over 10 rounds.

Paul’s bout with Tyson ultimately felt like an exhibition event.

Staged over eight two-minute rounds, 58-year-old Tyson looked a shadow of the fighter who once reigned supreme and for his part Paul never seemed willing to try to knock out the legendary former undisputed champion.

Chavez Jr represents a far different challenge. The 39-year-old held the WBC middleweight world from 2011 to 2012 and has been active, fighting five times since the start of 2020.

Who will prevail? Let’s look at the 'Tale of the Tape'...

Jake Paul initially found fame as social media personality and his first forays into boxing came in 2018 when he completed in a white-collar bout.

Paul made his professional debut in 2020 against another social media star, AnEsonGib, winning via a first round TKO.

He put together a 6-0 record with wins over former NBA player Nate Robinson, and a group of fighters who had previously competed in MMA competitions - Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley (twice), and Anderson Silva.

In 2023, Paul suffered his first and so far only professional defeat as he was beaten via split decision by Tommy Fury, the younger brother of former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury. That bout was also Paul’s first against an active professional boxer.

Paul responded to that loss by outpointing another MMA star, ex UFC fighter Nate Diaz, and then claimed a pair of first round stoppage wins over two boxers with winning records - Andre August and Ryan Bourland.

The Ohio-native defeated MMA and bare knuckle fighter Mike Perry in the sixth round in July of 2024 before his clash with Tyson at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in November.

That bout generated huge interest and income (it was the biggest boxing gate in US history outside of Las Vegas), but perhaps left many fans feeling short changed.

The self-proclaimed face of boxing has stressed he believes he can go on and challenge for a world title in the not too distant future, but anything less than a comprehensive win over Chavez Jr would put those ambitions on the backburner.

The pressure has always been on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The son of legendary three-division world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, there was interest in Chavez Jr’s career from the get-go and his two amateur bouts as a teenager were both broadcast on Mexican TV.

Chavez Jr made his debut in 2003 with a decision win over Jonathan Hernandez  and put together a 23-0 record before the first blemish on his record, a draw with future IBF light middleweight champion Carlos Molina - although he won the rematch immediately after via majority decision.

In 2011, Chavez Jr claimed the WBC middleweight crown by outpointing Sebastian Zbik and he defended that title against Peter Manfredo (5th round TKO), Marco Antonio Rubio (UD) and Andy Lee (7th round TK), before losing his title to Argentine legend Sergio Martinez on points.

Chavez Jr suffered his second defeat in 2015 against Andrzej Fonfara, but responded with a pair of wins before a 2017 bout against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in a huge Cinco de Mayo showdown.

The bout was billed as 'Civil War', but proved to be little more than a skirmish for Canelo as Chavez Jr was comprehensively outpointed, losing all 12 rounds and all three scorecards.

Two years later, he quit in the corner after five rounds against Daniel Jacobs, drawing intense criticism from the Mexican press.

Chavez Jr has fought seven times since the loss to Canelo, winning four and losing three, and he was last seen in July of 2024 claiming a points win over former UFC fighter Uriah Hall.
