Jaime Munguia vs. Erik Bazinyan: Tale of the Tape

Tijuana Titan Jaime Munguia is set to square off against the unbeaten Erik Bazinyan in a 12-Round Super Middleweight Showdown at the Diamond Desert Arena in Glendale, Arizona on September 20.

Munguia tasted defeat for the first time when he faced all-time great Canelo Alvarez recently, but that should only serve him well against the power and skill he meets here in Bazinyan.

Our article will give you a full fighter bio for both Munguia and Bazinyan, as well as a fighter profile for both fighters, which will include their strengths and weaknesses.

Jaime Munguia profile

Munguia enters this fight with a professional boxing record of 43-1, losing his unblemished record when coming off worst on points in a clash with all-time great Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas in May as he missed the chance to on the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.

Munguia debuted in July 2013, with a win against Manuel Mora by technical knockout and went on to win his first 26 professional fights before he finally earned his first title shot.

That came in February 2018 as Munguia defeated Jose Carlos Paz via technical knockout to grab the vacant WBC Latino Super Welterweight title. He later defeated Sadam Ali for the WBO World Super Welterweight title.

Further belts came via the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight when he beat Tureano Johnson in 2020 and he also won the vacant WBC Silver Super Middleweight title in June 2023, besting Sergiy Derevyanchenko via unanimous decision.

He started 2024 with a TKO win over John Ryder in Phoenix to retain that belt, before his loss against Alvarez in Las Vegas, leaving his record standing at 43 wins, 34 by knockout, and just one loss.

Erik Bazinyan profile

Like his opponent, Bazinyan has made a long unblemished start to his career. He debuted in September 2013 beating Canadian Matt Heim by knockout, and won 13 consecutive fights before earning his first title fight in September 2016.

He won the WBO Youth Super Middleweight title by unanimous decision, defeating Germany's Aro Schwartz in Montreal.

Since then, he has added the WBO NABO Super Middleweight title in June 2018, the North American Boxing Association Super Middleweight in October of that year and the vacant North American Boxing Federation Super Middleweight title in June 2021, latterly when beating American Scott Sigmon by TKO in Mexico.

He has since made six successful defences, adding the NABA Super Middleweight title with a win over Marcelo Esteban Coceres in Montreal in June 2022.

His most recent outing against Shakeel Phinn in Montreal ended in a split decision, though many felt he had been fortunate to come away unbeaten in a fight dominated by his opponent. Now comes an even tougher examination.
