Gervonta "Tank" Davis returns to the ring this weekend as he defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center.
A blockbuster match-up against Shakur Stevenson or a clash with rising star and newly crowned WBO champion Keyshawn Davis could be on the cards for Davis later this year, but first he has to make sure he avoids an upset against Roach.
Davis is the clear favorite, but Roach has compiled a 25-1-1 record and is bidding to become a two-weight world champion.
Roach is the WBA super featherweight champion and is stepping up in weight to challenge for Davis’ lightweight title. The 29-year-old is clearly a quality operator, but he may find Davis too powerful to cope with on Saturday.
Tank has put together an incredible 30-0 record with 28 of those wins coming inside the distance. Isaac Cruz is the only fighter who has managed to go the full 12 rounds with Davis and he’s also the only man who managed to avoid a knockdown against the Baltimore native.
Davis is -2000 to win outright and -400 to win by KO, TKO or Disqualification, so a value option for backing the overwhelming favorite is taking a chance on the champion to record at least two knockdowns.
Roach has only suffered one defeat in his career and he’s never been stopped - but he hasn’t faced anyone like Davis either.
The 30-year-old southpaw has faced previously unbeaten opponents in each of his last four fights, and he’s scored 15 knockdowns in total across his last seven bouts.
Davis carries serious power but Roach is a durable opponent and he may be able to survive a knockdown or two before he is finally beaten.
Following on from the above, it seems more likely that Davis will get the stoppage in the second half of the fight.
Roach is a decent technician and he has both a height and reach advantage in this match-up respite being the fighter who is stepping up in weight.
Davis is an incredible pressure fighter, but he’s also a smart boxer and he’ll want to use the first few rounds to work out his opponent rather than come out firing from the first bell.
Davis’ last three wins have all come between rounds seven and nine. Going back a bit further, five of his last six fights have gone beyond seven rounds, with the other finishing in the sixth, so Roach should be able to drag this contest into the second half even if he can’t make the final bell.
As a Davis stoppage looks the most likely result, there is an opportunity to go for a single round here and round nine is a point where he has finished many previous fights.
Tank stopped Hector Luis Garcia in round nine of their contest back in 2023 and he is perhaps a fighter on a comparable level to Saturday’s opponent, as Roach has a split decision win over the Dominican on his own record.
Of course, picking a round in boxing requires a big slice of luck but in this case there are a few indicators that rounds 7-9 could be the moment when Davis gets the job done. The three-weight world champion has 14 fights that were scheduled for 12 rounds on his record and five of those have finished in that range, so a small stake on Davis in the ninth looks to have a fair chance at +750.
