David Benavidez vs. David Morrell titles at stake

Benavidez’s WBC interim light-heavyweight title will be on the line and, while that is a step short of a full world title strap, it is key to the contest with Morrell.

The winner of January's bout will become a mandatory challenger for Artur Beterbiev’s WBC world title.

Clearly, Beterbiev may have unfinished business with Dmitry Bivol, but Benavidez and Morrell will be hoping to join the 175-pound conversation.

David Benavidez record

29-0 (24KOs)

Benavidez is a ferocious and unbeaten fighter, who has won all of his 29 professional contests.

The Monster Bandera Roja is a former two-time super-middleweight world champion who has won 24 of his 29 bouts by stoppage and the big-hitting American now turns his sights on the light-heavyweight division.

The 27-year-old made his debut in the 175-pound class when outpointing Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June and Benavidez is targeting a clash with either Beterbiev or Bivol.

David Morrell record

11-0 (9KOs)

Morrell won gold at the 2016 Youth World Championships and the Cuban then made the switch to the pro ranks in 2019.

The 26-year-old has won all of his 11 professional bouts, with nine of those victories coming by stoppage.

The southpaw captured the WBA (regular) super-middleweight title on his way up through the ranks, but Morrell has now turned his attention to the light-heavyweight division.

The Cuban outpointed Radivoje Kalajdzic on his 175-pound debut, but a clash against Benavidez will certainly represent the toughest test of the Santa Clara-born boxer’s career to date.
