The 26-year-old has won all of his 11 professional bouts, with nine of those victories coming by stoppage.
The southpaw captured the WBA (regular) super-middleweight title on his way up through the ranks, but Morrell has now turned his attention to the light-heavyweight division.
The Cuban outpointed Radivoje Kalajdzic on his 175-pound debut, but a clash against Benavidez will certainly represent the toughest test of the Santa Clara-born boxer’s career to date.
