Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull: Picks, Predictions and Odds

The undisputed super-middleweight crown is on the line when Canelo Alvarez puts his WBA, WBC and WBO belts up against William Scull’s IBF strap.

Canelo vs. Scull is the first fight of the Mexican legend's new deal with Riyadh Season, and the contest will take place at the Venue Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia.

The Mexican is a veteran of 66 professional contests, with his only defeats coming when stepping up to light-heavyweight to take on the elite-level Dmitrii Bivol and when battling with pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.

Scull made it 23-0 when outpointing Vladimir Shishkin and winning the IBF world title in October, but even as a world champion, the Cuban is untested at the top level of the sport.

Canelo isn’t expected to have too many issues becoming a two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion in Saudi Arabia with the Mexican -3300 for victory.

Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull betting picks and predictions

Canelo Alvarez to win by decision (+140)

Canelo Alvarez is a four-weight world champion, a two-time lineal king and the only boxer in history to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion.

The Mexican lost his IBF 168lbs title when opting not to face off with mandatory challenger William Scull last year, but the 34-year-old now has the chance to become a two-time undisputed champ on Saturday night when he finally faces the challenger.

Canelo has dismissed the challenge of a whole host of top-level opponents in a glittering 66-fight career and the Guadalajara fighter continues to be one of the brightest stars in boxing.

Jaime Munguia, Jermell Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Sergey Kovalev, Danny Jacobs, Gennadiy Golovkin, Erislandy Lara and Amir Kahn are just a few of the fighters who have been dismissed by the Mexican, and there are just a couple of blemishes of Canelo’s card.

Dmitrii Bivol got the better of the 34-year-old in 2022, but that contest came when Canelo stepped up to light heavyweight. Alvarez has recovered well since the loss to the 175-pound king.

The only other defeat on the Mexican’s stacked record came against all-time great Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, and Alvarez has gone on to become the ruler of the super-middleweight division since.

There has to be some concern surrounding how much is left in Canelo’s tank, after contesting 66 bouts in a professional career which started in 2005, but he has just signed a mega-money five-fight deal with Riyadh Season and doesn’t look likely to depart the top of the sport anytime soon.

William Scull is the IBF super-middleweight champion, but the Cuban is unproven against an opponent of Cancelo’s class.

El Indomable failed to dazzle when outpointing Vladimir Shishkin to pick up the IBF 168-pound strap and there is little substance to his card. However, Scull is a fresh, unbeaten and confident fighter and will enjoy considerable height and reach advantages on Saturday evening.

Those factors are unlikely to be enough to turn the bout in the Cuban’s favor, but perhaps Scull can be a little more competitive than odds of +1400 suggest.

John Ryder was a capable, but certainly not outstanding super-middleweight, and the Briton was able to take Canelo the distance in 2023. Jermell Charlo was a welterweight who made the big jump to 165lbs to face the Mexican, and he was also able to last until the final bell.

Canelo was also taken the distance in his most recent fights against Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga, and in fact, all of Alvarez’s last six contests have gone the full 12 rounds.

Of course, Scull is unproven against an opponent at the 34-year-old’s level, but he is a big and slick fighter who carries the confidence not to be intimidated in Saudi Arabia.

Canelo will almost certainly walk away as the undisputed super-middleweight king on Saturday night, but there are enough factors to suggest he may have to settle for a decision success in Riyadh.

Alvarez is -188 to win by stoppage and +140 to win by decision in Saudi Arabia, and at those odds, a chance can be taken on Scull proving more of a test than the betting suggests.
