Gervonta Davis defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach in Brooklyn on Saturday night and there is a quality undercard for the event, with Alberto Puello putting his WBC super lightweight strap on the line against Sandor Martin.
Puello has a 23-0 record and is fighting as the full champion for the first time after taking interim honors with a split decision win over Gary Antuanne Russell in June of last year.
Martin is challenging for a world title for the second time, having lost out via split decision to Teofimo Lopez in December 2022.
He has fought twice since then, claiming two stoppage wins in Europe, and has a 42-3 record.
Puello and Martin look fairly evenly matched and the best starting point could be backing the fight to go the distance, based on their respective styles and records.
This junior welterweight title fight pits two southpaws against each other and that means that tactically both men will have to adapt a little, so they could spend the first few rounds feeling each other out and neither fighter boasts huge power.
Puello has 10 wins inside the distance in 23 fights and the Dominican hasn’t claimed a stoppage since 2020, with his last five victories all coming on points.
Martin may be coming into the bout after back-to-back knockout wins, but they were comeback fights after his defeat to Lopez and prior to that his last early finish victory came in 2019.
All three of Martin’s losses have come on points and Puello is unbeaten, with neither having looked in any danger of being stopped previously, so there is a very good chance that the judges will be required.
Martin comes into this bout as the slight underdog, but the 31-year-old from Barcelona may be able to pull off a minor upset at the Barclays Center.
Puello is unbeaten, but the best win on his record is a win over Russell in his last bout and that was a split decision victory after 12 incredibly close rounds.
In contrast, Martin has been a European champion and has a very impressive majority decision win over Mikey Garcia on his own CV.
Martin was perhaps unlucky to be on the wrong side of a close decision to Lopez, who is a level or two above anyone Puello has shared a ring with, and Saturday could be his night.
With Martin capable of pulling off a small upset and the fight likely to require scorecards, backing the Spanish challenger to win on points is the standout play in the method of victory market.
It is probably unlikely that either fighter will score a knockdown but Martin does probably carry a little more power.
He’s managed 15 KO wins in his 43 victories and has of course stopped his last two opponents.
It isn’t always the case but sometimes judges do get swayed by the fighter who seems to be landing with the more telling shots and Martin is the more likely of these two to have that advantage in his favor.
